I've been staying at this hotel over the last 10+ years and the recent changes and renovation works have elevated a stay, I'm always keen to see what improvements have happened. Plenty of staff around, helpful and friendly. This stay included the Valentine's meal, which was superb. Another enjoyable stay.
Pre-stay there was a bit of a mix up with restaurant table booking not being checked against guest list, but everyday is a school day and it didn't spoil the stay.

It’s a lovely old building with nice quirks like slightly uneven floors & a huge closet in the room
Nothing

Great breakfast. Very cheerful and attentive staff. Toast rack, side plate and second knife. Traditional values, cosy and comfortable.
It would have been good to have shampoo.

Character, Comfort, Location including car parking
Great bar with log burning fireplace
Brilliant staff
Nothing.
No lift and very few flat floors. This might be a issue for some guests

Very cosy country style pub/ inn
Drinks were a reasonable price and the lady behind the bar in Saturday night was very friendly
The bed was very hard and as it was 2 singles put together there was a difference in height which wasn't great. There was also some wear and tear in the bathroom and the bedroom curtains were frayed.
Breakfast was expensive for what it was, especially when it was instant decaff coffee and the server was not very friendly.
When we booked we were planning to have dinner there however when we tried to book a table we were told they were not serving dinners until sometime in February, I feel this should have been advertised on their website.

Very cosy very friendly staff and most importantly dog friendly
The food menu options was not good. Also we were not told about the kitchen being off for the evening that we stayed.

Lovely period property in a superb central location with plenty of onsite parking. The staff were outstanding.
Inside has obviously been refurbished to a high standard and the breakfast was good value and very good quality.
The room was clean and comfortable.
Difficult to fault given the period nature of the property. Wish list would be more plug sockets or usb ports in the bedroom - and perhaps a better TV? Also no shampoo and conditioner n the room but we never asked.
To be honest though, they are suggestions rather than didn’t likes, as the stay was great - it’s difficult to fault.

The property is well located in the centre of Oakham with its own car park. The historical features of the old building enhance the rooms. The rooms are well equipped and comfortable and the staff are friendly and helpful
There is nothing we don’t like about the property

The location
Had to move room due to a broken toilet. The room we stayed in had mould in the bathroom, broken lampshade, ring marks on the table, dated decor with foreign plug sockets!! WiFi was unavailable. Very grubby room and poor customer service

The hotel is partly renovated. The renovated areas are nicely done, but we enjoyed equally the unrenovated areas. Our room was budget or standard, but was comfortable, warm and full of character. We did not eat an evening meal (the restaurant is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays), but breakfast was very good. We found the staff friendly and helpful. Our favourite was the gentleman who supervised breakfast. Sadly, I didn't ask his name, but he was charming, humorous and made us feel very welcome. The hotel is well placed to explore Oakham and the surrounding area
Only niggles, nothing worth mentioning

Staff are really friendly and helpful. Nice cosy and quiet vibe to the Inn. Free parking is provided when arriving.
My room toilet could do with some repairs, quick fixes.

Location was excellent
Waiting staff very attentive
Food good
We were disappointed with the welcome we received on arrival, which unfortunately set a negative tone for our stay.
The receptionist was unhelpful when we asked about parking directly outside the hotel on a Sunday. While he told us we could stay for one hour, he couldn’t tell us what time the restrictions ended. We arrived at around 5.30pm and were left to go back outside to read the signs ourselves, which stated parking ended at 6pm. The fact that this is directly outside the hotel, we feel this is something reception staff should know—especially as we were juggling luggage, a dog and Christmas presents.
What was most upsetting, however, was his attitude towards my 88-year-old mother. She used to run the George Hotel around 60 years ago and was visiting for the first time since. When she commented that the building had changed and mentioned the staircase, the receptionist responded dismissively with “well you would expect changes in 60 years.” There was no warmth, interest or courtesy, which felt unnecessary and disrespectful.
The interaction left my husband and I feeling uncomfortable and unwelcome, and it was a shame as this visit was meant to be a meaningful and nostalgic one for our family.

Lovely old world hotel. our room was large and we had a large comfortable bed.
The hotel is located right in the centre of Oakham which is a great place to visit.
A special shoutout to Lamin, the gentleman at breakfast. He was extemely personable and made our stay extra special.
We would certainly stay again! Thankyou.
The bathroom was slightly dated but no big deal. Other than that no complaints.

Fabulous staff. Lovely building.
Food was a little bit fancy for us - we would have prefered a bar meal, but having said that it was all delicious and the staff were fantastic.

Food was really good and back room set up with the fire and radio is really nice
The bedroom. It was dirty and the bathroom was mouldy. The shower was broken and was soaking the floor. More importantly, our room must have been under and next to the staff utilities / cleaning room. From 12am to 2am there was nonstop running around, banging, drawyers being opened and shut, stuff being thrown around. it then stopped and restarted at 5am, with washing machines being turned on at 6am and the same noise as earlier in the morning, continuing until 9.30. Got no sleep and couldnt even relax in the morning. Poor. When we checked out, we wanted to speak to a manager or reception and nobody was visible or available for almost 15mins. Couple in front were waiting to check in, so would have been waiting longer! Finally, the car park… it states that you do not need to reserve a space, BUT the car park is quite small and was full when we got there, so we had no space and had to park next door and pay, until a space became available, so be careful, it may not be free parking

The service and all staff were very lovely, helpful. We really liked the location and all the shops, pubs and restaurants to hand.
The room was a nice size but definitely very tired and needed restoration work. So do the corridors. Appreciating it is an old building as we always book somewhere characterful

Lovely room and old inn style building
No food on a Monday and Tuesday and when we tried to eat there on Wednesday we were told we couldn’t as a big party of people were dining even though we were residents
Also could not even use the bar on the Monday.
Needed proper cups/ mugs for tea making facility

The location was perfect. Right in the centre of Oakham so we were able to park the car and walk everywhere. We had dinner, which was exceptional and breakfast at the hotel which was wonderful. We loved the bar area which was very cosy with lovely fruniture and welcoming colours. We also loved sitting in front of the fire.

Lovely hotel in a great location, very good food but see below
When we arrived the receptionist was very brusque and not particularly welcoming. I was not able to make the shower give cold water. By far the worst thing was that despite telling the hotel about the significant food allergies of one of our party, this was completely ignored for the evening meal, a family member became quite ill, missed the meal and had to go to bed. This is utterly inexcusable.

Great location and lovely atmosphere in the main part of the inn. Our room was large and comfortable.
The room felt a bit tired and the bathroom could do with updating.

This is a lovely hotel, with a cosy, genteel atmosphere. The staff were all friendly and helpful, offering to take our bags to our room, and genuinely concerned that we enjoyed our stay. The room was comfortable and a decent size, the bed was huge and everything was spotlessly clean. Tea and coffee facilities were provided in the room. The breakfast menu was excellent and there seemed to be plenty of choice, though we opted for a full English breakfast, which was generous in size and very good quality produce.
Not really something I didn't like, but something that we have to take into consideration when we visit a place, as my husband is disabled. There is plenty of car parking at the rear of the hotel - it's not great if you have any disabilities as the parking area is gravelled and there is a step up out of the car park and a walk across the service yard to access the rear door of the building, but I simply got round it by dropping my husband at the front entrance before parking the car.

Location. Dinner. Breakfast.
Heavy tread of person in room above. Having to go through courtyard to bedroom.

The position was perfect for access to the area. The main building was lovely with lots of character. The car park was large.
The staff were jolly and offered good suggestions of places to visit.
The outer room we were staying in was a good room but very tired. The toilet was difficult to flush and the shower was very low making washing hair very awkward. Unfortunately on the second night - the new guests were noisy.

Tastefully refurbished. Lovely room. Great location and free parking. Breakfast good. Friendly staff.
Not a gamechanger, but a hairdryer in the room would have been useful.

Beautiful historic hotel in the middle of Oakham. This hotel has become a firm favourite for us and our two dogs!
The bar area is much more atmospheric than the slightly formal restaurant.

Great location, friendly helpful staff, a really nice interesting property that is full of character.
The room was cold and the heating was not on. We asked for a fan heater and we were subsequently provided with a plug in radiator which did the job although the bathroom was still freezing with no way of airing the towels.
Soundproofing was awful between the bedrooms, you could hear everything going on next door.
Generally the room was tired and a bit neglected.
