Dolce by Wyndham Siracusa - I Monasteri Golf & Spa

We had the best time at this beautiful hotel. We had a lovely suite in an old building away from the hotel with a view over a pond and fields. The staff were so friendly, particularly Giorgio, who helpfully recommended local places to visit. The food was delicious. We loved the pool too. At present we would describe the hotel as faded glory with some areas needing attention BUT it is now under new ownership and awaiting a refurbishment starting in October so don’t let that put you off. The price of a stay reflects this. When it becomes a 5 star resort again we may not be able to afford to stay and we would love to return.

Breakfast was good, but the same items day in day out. Room very good. The staff are excellent, and go out of their way to help you. The grounds of the hotel are fantastic and extensive. Location is also good.

They need to install a dehumidifier in the old rooms as damp is inevitable in such an old structure. The access to the rooms in the old part, is not good for physically challenged guests because of the steep stairs.

The room was spacious, very large and comfortable bed. The setting of the hotel is beautiful. Selection of food at breakfast, if you're into sweet breakfast (cakes/pastries/biscuits/granita), is very good. Parking at the hotel.

The hotel didn't feel like 5 stars; more like it was really struggling. They charge extra for everything, such as to change your pool towel (EUR5) or omelette at breakfast (EUR4). Water in the room wasn't replenished; instead, they would put two small bottles into the empty fridge in the room which we assumed were free. At the end of the stay we were charged EUR2.50 for each. Bar food was served with plastic cutlery and paper plates. My husband's salad wasn't drained properly - leaves swimming in liquid mix of water and caesar sauce... EUR15 for that, in a plastic container. Toiletries and vanity kits were not replenished, and no robe/slippers provided. Some of the hotel staff were sometimes borderline rude and many times clueless about what was going on at the hotel. We were recommended restaurants when the hotel restaurant was full on the day of arrival, but the recommended restaurants both turned out to be closed. As you can guess they didn't offer to make the reservation for us on the day or any other day. Staff have no idea about cold coffees or alternative milk, so do not bother asking for a freddo or an oat latte. Cocktail making is also very hit and miss as the bar girl just poured two 'martinis' straight out of the bottle in a short glass when asked for martini cocktails. No garnish or anything. Charged EUR10 for each. There were ants by the pool so be wary, as their bites were nasty. Lastly, vegan breakfast options were very limited even though I was assured there were plentiful vegan options (my guess is they mistook vegan for vegetarian). There was no plant-based yogurt, even on request. No cooked vegan breakfast, such as beans/veggies.
