Summer House Cairns

Handy bus to town, near the airport. Good size private rooms and friendly staff

They offered really nice amenities. The room was comfortable with an AC and clean. There is also a restaurant and bar downstairs. They also offered a bus ticket voucher of 50 AUD which was so good. The best thing is the shuttle service to the Cairns city.

The restaurant and bar were v good. Food was tasty and decent sized portions. The free shuttle runs into town every 30 mins. One particular staff member (Canadian girl w brown hair) was so helpful and kind. They gave towels on request.

I was in an 8 bed dorm and happened upon a hefty sized family (about 20) of cockroaches under my bed. Upon further inspection, I realised they were absolutely everywhere. In the lockers, in the bags, on the floor and walls (about 30). I was handed a can of raid and told that they’re normal given the climate. I do understand a couple of them here and there, but this was a full scale invasion in my room. The next morning, I continued to press the issue and was given a new, private room. I waved the cockroaches goodbye and went into my new room where I was met with new ones; admittedly only a handful. The private room was much better, and apart from the few cockroaches and the small pile of toenail clippings in the corner, was pretty okay. The bed was very hard and I didn’t get much sleep, but I took the win. Not the hostels fault but some things to note: The kitchen is wildly overwhelming. Hygiene seems optional; I saw someone wipe raw chicken off a chopping board with a tea towel and then put both the board and towel back as clean. The sanitary bins are not emptied frequently enough and used pads are left on the floor of stalls and showers.
