About this house rental

This is a lovely 2 bedroom 1 bath property. Large King bedroom, 2nd bedroom with queen bed, luxurious bath with oversized shower, living room, dining room, kitchen with laundry, outdoor walled garden with hot tub, deck/patios and pond. This property is no longer pet friendly.

200 year old Casa Carlos features a 1 ton 12,000 BTU mini split air conditioner.

Town – 3 blocks to Taos Plaza, 18 miles to Taos Ski Valley. Easy walk to shops, restaurants and galleries. National Register of Historic Places. Professionally landscaped and enclosed yard.

Casa Carlos, dating to the early 1800s, is one of the few properties in Taos available for rental that is listed in both the National Register of Historic Places (United States Department of Interior) and the New Mexico State Register of Cultural Properties. The former home and studio of Charles “Carlos” Berninghaus, a noted Taos artist and son of Oscar Berninghaus, who was one of the founders of the Taos art colony in the 1920s. This beautiful example of an adobe casita was authentically restored and beautifully landscaped by its former owner, the founder of Taos’ El Monte Sagrado Resort. The interior, exterior and grounds have been carefully preserved and methodically tended to make this home a treasure for returning guests who call Casa Carlos their “home away from home”. A complete, historically sensitive renovation of all interior spaces was completed in 2020. A rare feature for a Taos vacation rental is the home’s private walled garden, which features a gorgeous pond, trickling water, shade trees, diverse and flowering plant life, visits from many beautiful varieties of birds and butterflies, and a grassy area. A private hot tub, multiple seating areas, an outdoor gas grill, and exterior lighting are also features of the garden. The current owners have refurnished the home in colonial period Mexican, Indian, Indonesian/Dutch, Romanian and California Rancho Monterey antique furnishings, as well as original art and print photography from Mexico and the Southwest.
The home features a beautiful King bedroom, and a 2nd bedroom containing a queen size bed, a mock kiva fireplace (decorative) and historic charm.

The home is an easy stroll into town and Taos Plaza for meals, or utilize the home’s fully equipped modern kitchen to dine in, or grill outside and dine al fresco in the garden. The home is stocked with games, puzzles, playing cards/ poker chips, books, DVDs/movies, vinyl records and turntable, and cable/Blue Ray entertainment system for family time and relaxation in the beautifully furnished living area, which features coved viga ceilings, a gas kiva fireplace, and abundant natural light.

Additional architectural features include historically preserved coved and viga ceilings throughout, a gas kiva fireplace, custom ironwork, vintage Spanish Colonial lighting, radiant heated Saltillo tile floors, 3 foot thick 200 year old adobe walls, vintage and historical doors, and custom made cement tilework from San Luis Potosi, Mexico in the kitchen and bathroom.

There is a 1-ton (12,000 BTU) mini-split located in the kitchen at the rear of the house. It is positioned to blow air forward toward the center of the home. Its primary purpose is to assist in cooling the rear portion of the house and, consequently, the home as a whole during the hottest days of summer. The home's 2-foot-thick adobe walls throughout the rest of the house (with the exception of the kitchen) naturally regulate the indoor temperature, as is typical of historic adobe homes.
With the addition of the mini-split, the home remains very comfortable even on the hottest summer days.

Casa Carlos will restore your senses and “recharge your batteries” in a gorgeous and authentic home of history, character, and Northern New Mexican charm. “Nuestra casa es su casa/Our home is your home”.

Overall, I recommend this vacation rental. Reviewer Comments: Casa Carlos is a lovely, historic home beautifully decorated with authentic southwest charm. It is within easy walking distance to the town center and easy drives to the Taos Pueblo, Ski Valley, Rio Grande bridge and many other areas of interest. The significant plus is a serene, peaceful outdoor space with gardens, various comfortable seating areas, a fire pit and hot tub. We spent a great deal of time in this outdoor setting after spending the day out and about. The home is well-equipped with everything you need. It is an old home so it has its quirks, but to us that’s what made it more special. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and highly recommend it.

We loved our stay at Casa Carlos. You could tell this property has been curated with love. All the fun decor and art, the impeccable restorations, and Taos charm made this stay very special. It’s close to plaza but also veey quiet. We slept great in the comfy king bed, enjoyed the hot tub one night and loved sitting in the living room by the kiva fireplace. The property manager, Linda, is a delight to work with. They didn’t miss a thing. Five star all the way!

Rating Details: The property manager was very helpful. The vacation rental was spotless. I was very happy with the location. I was very satisfied with the condition of the vacation rental. Overall, I recommend this vacation rental. Reviewer Comments: Casa Carlos is an amazing collision of early 19th century adobe architecture and modern luxury. That is, classic thick adobe walls, arched entrances, and vigas meet a hot tub under the stars, large walk-in shower, and radiant-heated Saltillo tile floors. For a home that is somewhere in the neighborhood of 200 years old, it has been lovingly restored with meticulous attention to detail. The décor is simply lovely as is the high desert lush oasis found in the backyard. The bed is very comfortable, and the kitchen is well equipped and a joy to cook in. Situated in a historic neighborhood on a slight rise, it is an easy 10-minute walk to the Taos Plaza. This is our second week-long stay and we’re angling to return in the future.
