This delightful cottage stands high on the fellside adjacent to the Cumbrian Way, with superb views across the valley to the hills around Ullswater. Accessed by a single track country lane, Lowether has been converted from traditional stone barns overlooking a cobbled courtyard. It is attractive and comfortable, and makes a wonderful holiday base.

Lowther is a haven away from the stresses and strains of everyday living and ideal for anyone looking to spend some time amidst the peace and quiet of beautiful scenery. Also in the area surrounding Penrith is the wonderful Rheged Discovery Centre, Lowther Leisure and Wildlife Park, Dalemain Historic House and Gardens and beautiful Hutton in the Forest. The lakes and fells to the south are easily reached or go north to the charming villages and historic sites in the Borders, a trip to fascinating Hadrian’s Wall is a must. Great location and character. Quiet. Easy for walks to Ullswater and surrounding fells. Heating could do with improvement so that guests have control of when it is on and temperature. Could do with a bit more cleaning in places.

Lovely old stone cottage in a peaceful location but in need of some TLC. Spacious and nicely furnished. Modern kitchen, well equipped. Modern bathroom with effective towel radiator though the shower pressure is just average. Comfy beds and bedding, and good storage space for clothes. Lots of hooks and a hall cupboard for coats. The stairs are not steep and the steps are shallow. As the cottage is located at the end of a quiet single track road, you can walk straight out into the beautiful countryside. It’s also in a designated dark sky area of The Lakes, so you can see the Milky Way on a clear night! From the dining table you can watch the sunrise and mists fading through the large ground floor window. Breathtaking. We found Lowther to be a quiet out of town retreat for the northern Lakes and had a happy and very restful holiday. But the heating wasn’t on when we arrived at 4pm and the house was cold. And no extra duvets/blankets available for cold nights. It took us a couple of days to adjust as the cottage doesn’t easily retain the heat, in spite of the extra electric fire in the lounge and portable radiator. Luckily we always take fleece blankets with us so we didn’t have to ask for any. The owner and family live on site and were very friendly so I’m sure they’d have helped if we had. Some improvement suggestions: Spare blankets/duvets available. Fit a rubber trim to the glass shower screen to stop the lovely bathroom flooding. Replace the damaged lampshades. Tidy the curtains so they hang neatly and put one in front of the kitchen/front door. Arrange for recycling facilities. (Don’t let this put you off, we’d still recommend Lowther)Please note - The directions to Lowther are for approaching from Penrith/M6, not up through the southern lakes as we did.

We stayed for two nights over the weekend with our dog. Weather was fabulous. Managed a couple of long hikes. Aira Force and Keswick nearby. The cottage is lovely and has all the amenities we needed. Parking spaces right outside. Quaint and clean. Would recommend!

We had a great stay at the cottage despite some awful weather. The location is great if you like a bit of isolation … we certainly enjoyed the walks off the doorstep; six Wainwrights bagged during our stay and we didn't have to move the car on most of the days we were there. The cottage has lots of original charm and quirkiness and the views of Great Mell Fell and Little Mell Fell are excellent. Unfortunately there is no washing machine in the cottage which was a bit of a pain given the rainy weather. The surrounding area is lovely - the Cocklakes farm shop is only 10-15 mins in the car and well worth a visit for fresh meat, veg, local beers and deli items. Perfect place to go! View was amazing from the courtyard. House was clean and tidy, they have everything you need in the kitchen to prepare food. Telly worked well, I would suggest bringing you own DVD's and board games too. For dog walkers... If you leave the property and turn right follow the road and you can walk for as long as you wish if you need to stretch the dogs legs or a quick wee wees. I would recommend downloading Alltrails before going so you can where you can walk from the property. Review independently collected and verified by Reevoo

The cottage was beautifully situated for many stunning walks in this part of the Lake District.

The cottage was beautifully situated for many stunning walks in this part of the Lake District. It is spacious and well equipped however it does state in the ad it has a washing machine which it does not and being a family of four for a week, we really needed one. The huge downside to this property are the beds, they are incredibly uncomfortable and the pillows are way past their best. It wouldn't cost the earth to replace these given how much you pay for the property per week. When you spend the day walking for sometimes 7 hours, a good nights sleep is welcomed!
