About this house rental

FULL DESCRIPTION:

Welcome to Mampoo Hill--one of the most extraordinary private retreats on St. John, USVI.

Perched just 60 feet from the crystalline waters of Devers Bay, this remarkable island home puts the Caribbean Sea at your doorstep. Fall asleep to the sound of gentle surf. Wake up to trade winds and a view that will stop you cold -- direct, unobstructed sightlines across the shimmering bay to Little and Great St. James Islands, the most talked about and world-famous private islands in the entire Caribbean. Your morning coffee has never come with a backdrop like this.

Mampoo Hill isn't just any St. John rental. This home was designed and built by Glen Speer -- the celebrated craftsman and visionary behind St. John's most beloved architectural landmark, the iconic Mongoose Junction shopping and arts complex in Cruz Bay. Speer's genius was understanding that great Caribbean architecture doesn't fight the natural environment -- it surrenders to it. At Mampoo Hill that philosophy is alive in every deck, every carefully considered sight line, every garden.

THE HOUSE:

The design is quintessential Caribbean open-air living at its finest. Generous, breezy common spaces flow naturally onto sweeping decks that seem to hover above the bay, perfectly positioned to catch the prevailing trade winds and views of birds and swaying coconut palm trees. This is a home designed for living outdoors --long lunches that drift into afternoon, sunset cocktails that turn into dinner under the stars, evenings where the sound of the sea becomes your soundtrack.

When the tropical sun calls for retreat, the enclosed, air-conditioned bedrooms offer cool, peaceful sanctuary --the perfect balance of authentic island living and modern comfort. You get the full Caribbean experience without sacrificing a good night's sleep.

THE JACUZZI & DECKS:

The private jacuzzi is positioned to take full advantage of the Devers Bay panorama -- soak as the sun melts into the Caribbean horizon and the St. James Islands silhouette against colors that have no business being that vivid. The multiple decks offer different vantage points throughout the day, following the light as it moves across the water from morning gold to afternoon azure to the incomparable Caribbean sunset.

THE VIEW:

Let's talk about the view. Mampoo Hill sits on Devers day directly across from Little St. James and Great St. James Islands -- the former private retreat of Jeffrey Epstein, now the most recognized and discussed private islands on earth. Whether you find it fascinating, sobering, or simply a remarkable geographic footnote, there is no more conversation-starting view in the Caribbean. Guests describe sitting on the deck watching those islands across the water as an unexpectedly compelling experience and, quite simply, a view unlike any other.

THE SETTING

Estate Chocolate Hole is one of St. John's most coveted and serene neighborhoods -- quiet, private and authentic, yet just minutes from the restaurants, bars, shopping and ferry connections of Cruz Bay. The full acre of lush tropical grounds gives Mampoo Hill a sense of privacy and seclusion that feels miles from anywhere, while everything St. John has to offer is just a short drive away.

Speaking of which -- the optional Jeep is your ticket to everything. St. John rewards exploration. Hidden beaches, panoramic overlooks, snorkel spots the tour boats never find, the legendary North Shore. A Jeep doesn't just get you around--it transforms your vacation from a stay into an adventure. As us about availability when you book.

WHAT'S INCLUDED:

* 2 private bedrooms with AC and full bathrooms
* Open-air island living spaces
* Sweeping decks with panoramic views
* Private jacuzzi
* 1 full acre of tropical grounds
* 60 feet from the Caribbean Sea
* Washer and dryer
* Optional Jeep rental
* Minutes to Cruz Bay

EXPLORING ST. JOHN:

St. John is widely considered the most beautiful island in the entire Caribbean -- and once you arrive, you'll understand why. Two thirds of the island is protected US National Park, meaning it will remain pristine and unspoiled forever. No mega-resorts. Just extraordinary nature, turquoise water and the unhurried rhythm of island life.

THE JEEP

St. John's roads are steep, winding and driven on the left -- a Jeep isn't just convenient, it's the authentic island experience. The Jeep is available to rent only to Mampoo Hill renters and rented directly through the owners.

PRACTICAL INFORMATION:

St. John is reached by ferry from St. Thomas, which is served by major US carriers with no passport required for US citizens. The ferry from Red Hook on St. Thomas takes approximately 20 minutes and runs regularly throughout the day. Taxis and vans from the airport to Red Hook are plentiful.

The USVI enjoys warm, sunny weather year-round. Peak season runs December through April with reliably dry, breezy conditions. The summer and fall months bring occasional tropical showers that cool things down beautifully and keep the landscape lush and green -- and significantly lowers nightly nightly rates.

THE BOTTOM LINE:

Some vacation rentals are places to sleep between activities. Mampoo Hill is the activity. Guests who come for a week find themselves wondering how to stay longer. The combination of near-private beachfront position, legendary provenance, world-famous views, and authentic Caribbean architecture creates an experience that simply cannot be replicated anywhere on St. John.

There is only one Mampoo Hill.

Loved the scenic view, Banana Quit birds & sunsets! Snorkeling from beach near brown rock was spectacular!! We didn’t realize Mampoo Hill was “open air” w/only AC in the 2 bedrooms. The electricity on the island was completely out for 24 hours & no generator made it more like camping for a day! However the Jungle juice worked excellent, but still got quite a few bites as bugs love me! Jeep was great value & ran well for a 2018. It got us around the island but is in dire need of tires all around for safety purposes. Enjoyed our stay!

The hosts were great to work with and picked us up right at the ferry parking lot. The Jeep we rented from them was great and worked perfect to get us around the island. The house is amazing with incredible views everywhere you look. Master bedroom was nice with cool AC, a comfortable bed, and great bath layout with 2 vanities and plenty of closet space. Thank you Candace, Jennifer and Craig for a great stay!

Positives: The ocean view from the house is stunning and the layout was perfect for our family of two adults and two teenage daughters. The support staff, Jennifer and Craig, could not have been more helpful including getting us from the ferry to the house-Jeep, showing us the way to the house while pointing out essential accommodations (grocery store, gas station, where to drop off our garbage on a daily basis), and responding to texts when we had a few questions. The bathrooms and storage areas are spacious. The hot tub was fun when we could use it (see below) and the location of the house was easily accessible to Cruz Bay, the wonderful beaches and the grocery stores. The house is nestled away in a beautiful spot and some of the wildlife (the iguanas and bananaquits) were a source of wonder and amusement. Negatives: THE MOSQUITOS - the mosquitos were omnipresent in the morning and from 4 pm thru the evening and forced us inside despite high doses of the house-supplied deet. Two of the days, the mosquitoes were present most of the day. Two floor fans or screened-in area would have allowed us to enjoy the beautiful view from the deck, but instead we were stuck in our bedrooms for significant periods of time every day of our visit. A tall oscillating fan or a ceiling fan would make the hot tub more inviting. Craig warned us to keep any food covered up in the kitchen because a pearly-eyed thrasher took full advantage of the open-air layout of the house and would eat anything that was laying out. This proved to be quite an understatement. We stored every food item, but still fell victim to the incredibly audacious bird who would watch us eat from the railing and swoop down and take food from our plates or from dirty dishes in the sink if we left them unattended for even a moment. Even an unopened bag of almonds that we had taken out of the fridge for a few minutes was poked open. It was comic and annoying to be constantly shooing the bird away. Finally, the access point to swim in Devers Bay was further away than we expected and proved to be more than 100 yards away over a rocky shoreline.
