My wife and I go to Hawaii for our anniversary each year. After discovering this unit more than ten years ago, it is always our first choice. We're already booked for next year! Our favorite activities are a minute away. Whalers Village (the main upscale shopping on Maui is next door, with two of our favorite restaurants). The best whale watch and snorkel boat tours leave from the beach right in front (you can see them in the lanai pic). You can also see Black Rock to the right, which is possibly the best beach snorkeling anywhere. You can watch humpback whales from the lanai when we go in late February. The unit's big tv is "smart", so bring your smart phone and watch your same favorite shows on the big screen as you watch at home. The unit's interior is basically new and perfect, very comfortable. We really prefer The Whaler to the better hotels for all its comforts and conveniences. When you go, ask about the "secret" door from The Whaler right into the heart of Whaler's Village -- very convenient.

If you're looking for a place with wonderful views and great location, this is it. But if you're looking for an updated, nicely furnished unit. This is not it.
We were embarrassed that the other couple we invited were forced to sleep on a fold-out with springs popping through. We knew about the fold-out, but never expected the mattress would be impossible to sleep on. In addition, the club chair was broken and one side rested on the floor. The dining room chairs were rickety and wobbly. Badly in need of new furniture.
We were disappointed about this and expected better, but still enjoyed our stay overall.
