If you’re looking for high-end luxury, full-service amenities like a gym or pool, and someone to carry your luggage, you’ll want to stay somewhere else. Washington Square Inn in San Francisco is a cozy, European-style boutique guesthouse with 15 rooms. The space features older or mid-century-modern furnishings and offers a quaint, personalized experience rather than the feel of a large commercial hotel. My teenage son and I stayed here for one night and absolutely loved it. Step outside and you are right in the heart of North Beach and Little Italy, surrounded by the smell of garlic and authentic Italian pizza. There are coffee shops, bars, restaurants, and cafes all within walking distance. Spend a little time in these spots and you will find yourself mixing with locals and getting a real feel for San Francisco. One important thing to know before booking. Rooms labeled “Double” are meant for two people, but that does not mean there are two beds. That detail led us to switch hotels mid-visit. Another thing to note: there is no front desk person on site, but don't let that stop you. The lobby doors are locked. And the staff is just a call away, and VERY accommodating! The inn has the charm of an old Victorian/European home, with many nearby buildings dating back to the 1850s. It overlooks Washington Square Park and is close to Coit Tower and Chinatown — Fishermans Wharf is a quick bus ride down the street, or you can walk if you don't mind the hills. The overall ambiance feels like a cozy home away from home. The design is thoughtful and curated, the check-in process uses smart lock technology with a virtual front desk, and there is complimentary tea and coffee available in the lobby. It is an intimate, stylish, and historic stay in one of the city’s most iconic neighborhoods. I recommend it if you are an adventurer or want to have an authentic San Francisco experience.

Fabulous location and spacious comfortable rooms. The hotel had a welcoming and gracious ambiance and having the park opposite with lots of local restaurants was a huge positive

Right on Washington square park in North Beach. Walk everywhere - Chinatown financial district, Russian Hill and close to Market etc. Small but comfortable rooms. Great Value for money. Kaye’s entry without staff but secure and comfortable lobby. Close to City Lights. Bars and music. Italian restaurants galore.

No staff available. Electronic system system/ OpenKey didn't work. Did not receive information about OpenKey before arrival. Instructions over the phone gave access to keys of all (!) rooms, so no security!. Was told 'Maybe system will work later or tomorrow' !? But it didn't. Only one key was available for 2 people. Doors had scratch marks from difficult insertion and turning keys in electronic door locks. So, the non functioning electronic locks were a long standing problem! Tiny room, no space where to put your belongings, no chair, only 1 (one) cloth hanger at the door. Shower thermostat worked poorly, water was too hot. DO NOT BOOK.
