I booked into the Tree Inn last minute. This was on the night of the eclipse and if it wasn't so expensive everywhere else, I would have left. I stayed with my young child and were placed in a twin room. First of all, it's not clear where to check-in or with whom. We went to the bar and were shown up by a friendly lady but there was no differentiation between the inn and the pub if you see what I mean. The property is gorgeous for a drink (beautiful courtyard/lovely old setting) but very unsteady for staying the night. It's floors are tilted, and I guess this could add to its charm, but it didn't always feel safe. Anytime anyone moved around, we heard it. Our room was very small (not a problem), and painted an unfortunate dark green. It felt very oppressive and, with one window, very dark. No bedside lights and poor overhead lighting added to the general feeling of oppressiveness. There was also a very dark carpet and throws, all in all a very small, dark space in a very old building. My child was actually quite scared and couldn't sleep. However there was a kettle/slippers and these were welcome! But no fan and it was very hot as the window only opened a small way. We had a shared bathroom which had a leaky loo and damp floor. There was also a shower room but this was a way off so we opted to just deal with the leak. We were going to go down to the pub and take a look around/have a drink but a rather large dog was off the lead and began jumping up at us. The owner came over and got him on the lead, but this put us off trying the bar itself. I say this as a dog lover - you just can't trust unknown dogs esp around children. So this incident meant once we were in, we had to be in our room primarily. We took a look out into the courtyard to see the dog wandering around loose again so that was that. There is no chain lock to the inside of the room door - as a parent travelling alone with a child, you want to feel secure and safe, and that was lacking. I don't know if there are any staff on site but it also wasn't clear where they would be if there was a problem. A continental breakfast is advertised but there appeared to be very limited options for this. The kitchen area is used by guests for their own food, and it wasn't clear what was a guest's and what was for ALL guests. So basically we went elsewhere for breakfast. There was no option for a cooked breakfast for extra on the premises. However we did have a hot shower and I have to stay the shower was great! All in all, it's an interesting place and when we got up, I had a little look around and the other rooms looked way better than the one we were in. I wouldn't stay again unfortunately. It wasn't value for money and neither of us slept well.

We had a wonderful stay at the Tree Inn. It's an extremely characterful historic building in the village of Stratton with very convenient access to Bude & the North Cornwall/Devon coast. Our room was extremely comfortable & the help yourself breakfast in the morning suited us really well. Great choice of cereals, fruit, proper bread, local eggs & honey, Cornish tea etc. We were made to feel very welcome & had a fun night in the bar along with the other guests. We will definitely return. This place is a gem! Thankyou Simon!

A lovely, historical Inn with shared bathrooms and shower. Self-catered breakfast with cereals, toast, fruits, etc provided to help yourself to whenever you like! Would definitely return! :)

We booked a double room but got a twin. The room wasn't the cleanest of rooms and the valance on the bed base was grotty and stained and no TV in the room. Shared bathroom and kitchen. The kitchen was filthy with the bin overflowing for 2 days and dirty cups and plates left in the sink and the communal fridge absolutely stunk and bread was left out for 2 days on a chopping board. Was expecting a full breakfast but all there was was ceral and bananas. The bathroom had dirty towels lying on the floor for 2 days and whoever had a bath didn't bother to clean the bath out after themselves and the toilet was leaking......there definitely was no housekeeping during the 3 nights we was there. The second night we were there the fire alarm went off at 2.30am and continued to go on and off for over an hour until the fire brigade came and sorted it. There was no fire thankfully.
