    The Cross Keys is perfectly situated in the town centre for a visit to Saffron Walden. We had our evening meal and breakfast along with our overnight stay in room 7, the food was very good and probably the best part. You have to park about 500m away and pay in a public car park (despite booking.com saying parking available). The room is annexed outside and up a steel unlit spiral staircase which will definitely be an issue for some. The room was nice enough but the floorboards are extremely creaky and the extractor noisy during the night. There was a fault with the main room light causing it to flicker so we didn’t use it and the shower absolutely soaks the plastered (not tiled) wall.

    We had an enjoyable stay at Cross Keys. As it is an extraordinarily old hotel, it has some idiosyncrasies, as you would expect. The ceilings, hallways and rooms are small and pokey, which, when you get used to them, add to the charm. The location is fabulous, as it is right in the heart of Saffron-Walden, a wonderfully quirky small town, with a ton of history. All in all, a worthwhile experience.

    Stayed two nights and room was not serviced on second night. Rooms were not spacious and lots of cobwebs in the double glazing. Was woken up at 4am on both mornings by deliveries outside because of poor double glazing. Rooms had a kettle but supplies for tea and coffee were not replenished. Saving grace was the excellent breakfast and lovely young man serving us who was extremely personable and efficient. We have stayed at the Cross keys previously and had a much better experience. Perhaps the housekeeper staffing problems outlined in other reviews have not been solved yet at this establishment. We had a hole in one of the sheets and one of the towel racks was loose. This would have been picked up by a more efficient house keeping team.
