I was planning to leave a decent review for this hotel despite the many short falls this place has but the departure experience has left a very bitter after taste. The first issue at this resort is the racism towards local guests, apart from Luke/Lucas, Pita, Mereoni and the front desk lady everyone else made us feel like second class citizens. Exhibit A, on the first day at the restaurant, while giving our dinner order the server started serving a foreign guest. When I called her out for it she told us to wait and when I reminded her that our money contributes to their salary she told me they did nkt need our money and point blank told me to shut up. Patrick stepped in and got her to apologize and I left it at that. Exhibit B, the chef was difficult to deal with, I have email exchanges where I requested several times on the dietary requirements of my mother, no response from him. We asked him for gf breads or whole grain he point blank said can't be done so if you have dietary requirements all the best, you're on your own. Despite all that I was planning to leave a 3 star but the departure day was the final straw for me. First, we were told to leave our bags outside our rooms and someone will collect it, minutes before our boarding we find out our bags never made it, so we went and got it ourself from the room with help from Mereoni. But the real issue for me was when we were boarding the purple turtle boat to connect with the south sea cruises vessel. Firstly the MSAF rule states their boat cannot take more than 11 people, they stuffed all of us in it anyways and when we were boarding only one staff helped my mother board while the other two staff were talking to each other, my wife and I were assisting from the other side, in the process she fell and injured herself. There was absolutely no duty of care shown by staff not even a "Madam I am sorry. Can I get you some band aid" nothing, instead they asked me to sit on the other side of the boat when I refused they became confrontational, particularly one staff who was in my face and pointing fingers at me. Matamanoa management has a tendency to hurl personal attacks towards people who leave honest reviews. Do yourselves a favour, instead of attacking reviewers go sit by the beach and reflect on your failures.

I stayed at Matamanoa many years ago but it was even more beautiful than I remember. It’s now the 4th resort I’ve stayed in Fiji and it is by far the best. It’s just had a lovely renovation as well so the rooms and common areas were looking lovely. The island itself is pure magic. Crystal clear water, stunning snorkeling, beautiful palm trees and golden sand beaches. The resort has lots to do, spa, table tennis, books, tennis. It’s impossible to get bored on this island. It’s elegant but traditionally respectful to Fiji. The rooms ceilings are lined with stunning tapa cloths. The staff are lovely and attentive and as you can see the food is delicious! Couldn’t fault it and I’m a big foodie and you often can get mixed food on an island. But everything was fresh and delicious. Need I say more. Do yourself a favour and book it. It’s even more beautiful in person. Worth every penny and more.

Stayed here for seven nights for our honeymoon, in their most expensive room category. The island itself is beautiful—the reef and beach are stunning, and the adults-only setting makes it peaceful and romantic. Unfortunately, the service did not match the price point. The one word that best describes our experience is inconsistent. They frequently ran out of beach towels, which is difficult to understand for an island resort. There were also occasions when the water supply ran out. Meal orders were forgotten, clean bath towels were not always replenished, and when we asked for a buggy ride back to our room, we were sometimes told they were too busy. The front desk experience could also be improved. When we raised concerns, the receptionist was often not particularly helpful. On one occasion, she became visibly frustrated, walked out, and slammed the door. I don’t necessarily think her frustration was directed at us personally, but as a front-of-house representative, it could have been handled more professionally. The restaurant staff also seemed tired and overworked. More broadly, there was very little sense of warm or proactive hospitality. Many interactions felt transactional, and at times it felt as though requests were an inconvenience. Maintenance also needs attention. On the way to the Treetop Spa, there was a continuous overflow of water along the pathway. It was difficult to tell where the water was coming from or whether it was clean, and there was visible algae buildup around the area, suggesting it had been happening for some time. It was an eyesore. We also noticed rubbish along some pathways leading to the beach. It is a shame because the island itself is genuinely beautiful and the resort has a lot of potential. But for a seven-night honeymoon stay in their highest room category, we expected much more consistent service, cleanliness, and hospitality. With better staff training, staffing levels, maintenance, and attention to basic guest needs, this could be an excellent resort.
