LANDABOUT TOKYO

Hotel was very welcoming, clean and cosy. Location was super convenient as it was close the Yamanote and Keihin line. If you feel like taking the scenic route you can walk through Ueno park to Ueno Station. My husband and I will certainly stay here on our next Japan trip.

We stayed here in a room with futon beds. The room was small, but probably a little bigger than what you would typically find in Shinjuku or Shibuya. The bathroom was quite small, especially if you are tall. Everything was very clean and the location was convenient, with both JR and metro stations close by. It is not right in the heart of Ueno, but Ueno is only one stop away. The hotel also has a laundry, which was very useful during our stay. The staff were very helpful and spoke English well. They were young, friendly and sorted out our luggage shipment from Tokyo to Kyoto, which was very convenient. Breakfast was decent, and the coffee at the bar was particularly good.

The room was filthy with dust and hair everywhere, and most disgustingly, used socks and food wrappers from previous guests were left under and around the bed. How can a hotel possibly consider a room clean when you are literally finding another guest’s used socks underneath the bed? I repeatedly asked staff to properly clean the room. It took two days, and even after cleaning, there was still hair and dirt left behind, and socks and food wrappers under the bed. I also had items go missing from my room!! Having belongings disappear from your hotel room is completely unacceptable and extremely distressing. You would trust a hotel to keep your belongings safe, but apparently the staff suggestion is to lock up every single item you have before you leave the hotel. This includes every single toiletry item, every single piece of clothing, everything single item. Basically you should check out of your hotel every day before you leave, otherwise your items will go missing, and the hotel finds no problem with this. The staff also don’t care to do even basic things like managing the washing machines and removing items from guests who have left them way after the clothes are finished. I have stayed at plenty of hotels in Japan and around the world and I’ve never experienced this disgusting standard of cleanliness in my life. I never had any of my belongings go missing in any other hotel. Reception also closes at midnight. This level of cleanliness and service is unacceptable. This hotel seriously damaged my trip, and I would strongly advise anyone who cares about cleanliness, their belongings, or basic professionalism to stay somewhere else.
