Some of this review includes fairly detailed information about how everything works because English communication was limited and a few things were confusing when we first arrived. Hopefully, if someone is considering staying here, this helps them see that it’s worth the visit while also going in with a clearer understanding of what to expect. Upon arrival, I was initially taken through to La Vela Hotel, however La Living Collection is part of Terra Royal. They are in the same building but have separate entrances, lobbies and reception areas next door to each other. This wasn’t clear to me when I booked. Admittedly, I was travelling with my adult son, we were both stressed when we arrived, and we may have overlooked some information. Our stay included breakfast and access to the gym and infinity pool, but these facilities are accessed through La Vela Hotel. We were staying on the 19th floor, so to use them we had to take our elevator to the ground floor, walk outside and into the neighbouring La Vela lobby, use their elevator and ask an attendant to scan their access card for Floor 4 (gym), Floor 25 (breakfast) or T2 (pool). Once we understood how it worked, it really wasn’t a big deal. However, it’s definitely worth knowing beforehand, particularly if you’re travelling with young children or don’t speak Vietnamese. The apartment itself was tiny compared with Australian apartments, but having travelled to other countries I expected this and it wasn’t an issue. It was advertised as sleeping four, however there was no way two adults could have comfortably slept in my son’s bed. Personally, I’d say the apartment was better suited to three people. The bathroom backs directly onto the living area and the walls are very thin. It honestly felt like there was almost no bathroom privacy. If bathroom privacy is important to you, this may not be the apartment for you! The balcony was small but functional. All of the air-conditioning units vent onto it, which made it absolutely fantastic for drying clothes and towels, but less fantastic if you wanted to sit outside and watch the city go by. At night we would simply turn the AC off inside while we sat on the balcony and that worked well. Having a washing machine was fantastic, particularly for a longer stay. I couldn’t find a small packet of laundry powder at the nearby FamilyMart, so I asked the staff and they kindly gave me some. A small clothes horse would have been a great addition, but I just used coat hangers and they worked perfectly well. The kitchen was small but functional and having a full-sized fridge was brilliant. There were basic pots and pans and a kettle. However, if you actually plan on preparing food, be aware that there was no cutlery, bowls, knives, scissors or chopping board, so you may want to bring or buy a few basics. The shower had shower gel supplied but no shampoo or conditioner. The water pressure was great and we had plenty of hot water. The bathroom overall was clean and tidy. Also be mindful that Vietnamese plumbing generally isn’t designed for toilet paper to be flushed, so follow the instructions provided. On Day 11, I received a message from the cleaner asking for access to change our bedding and towels. I had been under the impression that it was a serviced apartment, but because nobody had been in to replace anything, I had simply been washing things myself. I’m still unsure exactly what happened and it appears our apartment may have been overlooked, but the staff were very apologetic once it was brought to their attention. There were also plenty of positives. The breakfast buffet at La Vela was really good, with a large selection of food catering to different tastes and cultures, as well as fresh fruit. Everything we ate was delicious. One thing to be aware of if you have food allergies is that allergens weren’t clearly labelled, so you may need to ask staff for assistance. The room was disappointingly small but was decently clean. If you order the breakfast, you also get to use the gym and its infinity pool, which is probably the highlight of the luxury apartment. There’s no cleaning service it’s just a room to stay in. I probably won’t stay there again since there are so many that offer much better services and quality hotels for the same price.
