    I was genuinely excited to stay at Hotel Sigiriya because of the famous view of Sigiriya Rock from the pool, but unfortunately the overall experience did not live up to my expectations. I was told that the rooms were generally quite similar, but the room I was assigned was very far from the main hotel area. The walk back to the room felt quite isolated, especially at night, because many of the surrounding rooms did not appear to be occupied. I did not feel particularly comfortable with the location and asked whether I could be moved closer to the main part of the hotel. I was told that the hotel was full and that there were no other rooms available. I found that a little surprising because the area around my room felt extremely quiet. I also noticed that many of the guests staying closer to the main hotel area appeared to be white tourists. I obviously cannot say whether that had anything to do with the room allocation, but as a brown traveller, it was something I noticed and it did leave me wondering why I had been placed so far away. The room itself was probably my biggest disappointment. It felt dated, very basic and in need of refurbishment. The layout was quite minimal, the bed setup felt strange, and instead of a proper headboard there seemed to be a cushion or padded section placed behind the bed. The bathroom also needed much more attention. There were black marks around some of the seals and fittings that looked like mould or mildew from prolonged dampness, and parts of the shower fittings appeared rusty. Overall, some areas looked worn enough that I did not particularly enjoy touching or using them. For a hotel that is so well known and charges what it does largely because of its location and view, I expected the rooms and facilities to be maintained to a much higher standard. The positive part of my stay was the staff arranging a packed breakfast for me because I had to leave very early for a safari. I appreciated that gesture and it was genuinely helpful. The pool view of Sigiriya Rock is undoubtedly beautiful, but for me, the view alone is not enough to justify staying here. If I returned to the area, I would probably choose a newer or better-maintained hotel elsewhere and simply visit the area for the Sigiriya views rather than stay here again.

    The stay at Hotel Sigiriya was truly memorable. The room was very clean, comfortable, and well maintained, with everything needed for a relaxing stay. The breakfast buffet offered a wide choice of tasty Sri Lankan and international dishes, and everything we tried was delicious. What makes this hotel special is its location. Waking up to a view of Sigiriya Rock and relaxing by the pool with the rock in front of us was an unforgettable experience. The staff were warm, kind, and always ready to help, which made us feel at home from the moment we arrived. If you are visiting Sigiriya, this is the place to stay. Great rooms, great food, great people, and a view you will never forget. We would love to come back!
