Our two-night stay at Emerald Resort Hikkaduwa was a bit of a mixed experience. There were several positive aspects, but also some areas that could be improved.
Positive aspects: The resort is in a very convenient location, right by the Galle–Colombo Road, so it is easy to find. It is also only around 450 m walking distance from Hikkaduwa Turtle Beach. The property feels relatively new, and our room was very spacious, nicely arranged, and comfortable. The bathroom was clean and well maintained. We also appreciated having a night guard and a lift, which is particularly convenient as the resort has four floors.
Areas for improvement: It seemed that most of the resort activities and services were handled by one young staff member. He was very friendly, helpful, and clearly doing his best, so there is absolutely no fault with him. However, he appeared to be overloaded with responsibilities. For example, during our stay there were around five groups of guests, and everyone came for breakfast at roughly the same time. He was responsible for preparing and serving breakfast, which resulted in guests having to wait.
Another disappointment was the breakfast. Although the menu offered several breakfast options, during both days of our stay only an English breakfast was available. The breakfast consisted mainly of toast, an omelette, and two sausages. Unfortunately, some of the fruits served were overripe and not really suitable to eat.
We also noticed that although there was a tea/coffee station in the room, we were told that tea and coffee packets were not available. In addition, the rooftop swimming pool was not in a sufficiently clean condition during our stay, so we did not feel comfortable using it.
Overall, Emerald Resort Hikkaduwa has good potential, a convenient location, spacious rooms, and some good facilities, but the service organization and maintenance of certain facilities could be improved. Our experience was therefore a mixed one—there were many things we liked, but also several aspects that prevented us from having a fully satisfying stay.
