High-end valueWell priced for this area
Le Vieux Fournil is a converted bakehouse, still with the original oven opening into the living space, providing that extra piece of interest and history to this wonderfully quirky building. The kitchen and bathroom are housed in the original woodstore and pig sty. The bedroom is converted from the hayloft although now the high ceiling is grandly adorned with its own chandelier! The cottage is located in the department of Mayenne in the north of the Pays de la Loire Region with its spectacular landscapes in the north and vast vineyards to the south. The house is 2 km’s from the historic town of Lassay-les-Châteaux which boasts one of the finest examples in France of a fortified medieval chateau. The town has many winding streets amongst which can be found examples of medieval living all situated just off the main Market Square where you will find shops, bars and restaurants. This is an ideal base for those seeking walking or cycling holidays in wonderful countryside or alternatively just a relaxing break from city life!

Absolutely loved it. Property set in beautiful grounds and close to amenities
Was met by Sandra and Paul on arrival, very welcoming, showed us around the property and grounds, was close by if we needed anything. Sandra booked us a vet appointment for our dog which was really helpful. We stayed in the bread oven which was lovely, good sized enclosed garden for us and the dog. Would definitely recommend .

Sandra and Paul have been the most friendly hosts you could wish for. The house is very cozy and well equiped. There's plenty of information provided about the region. Most mentionable is the splendid garden, with sheer endless space to relax and enjoy the quiet and peaceful surrounding. Thank you for a wonderful holiday.

Amazing, relaxing holiday
Sandra and Paul’s attention to detail was faultless, they had thought of everything. A very nice touch was the wine basket where you could purchase wine without leaving the cottage 🤗. Location was very rural and ideal for exploring the French countryside, which was easy to navigate being complete novices. We have missed Barnaby’s friendly morning welcome. We had a fantastic time , completely chilling out and recharging our batteries, we would definitely recommend this cottage, Sandra and Paul were excellent hosts. Thank you 😎

French Love Affair
The cottage was everything you hope for when visiting rural France. Sandra and Paul had paid great attention to all aspects when furnishing the cottage and all was in perfect working order. They were very helpful with advice on visiting towns, restaurants etc and Lassay les Chateaux was a delightful town. The tour of the Chateau proved very interesting which ended with a demonstration of dressing with medieval armouring on one of the guides. It was a nice change to wake up to bird song instead of traffic.

Immaculate presentation of accommodation
Great location in beautiful countryside where Sandra and Paul had considered every aspect of customer requirements. Their advice on restaurants, places to visit etc was extremely helpful and added to the holiday experience. I can really recommend their property for a Frence rural holiday plus Lassay les Chateaux is an interesting town.

Fabulous property in a beautiful area of France.
We stayed for a week in this fabulous property. It was beautifully furnished , exceptionally well equipped , spotlessly clean and had a stunning garden. The hosts were lovely and did everything they could to make our stay comfortable and enjoyable.
There was a welcome pack waiting for us on our arrival , including the most delicious home made jam . There were lots of little touches around the place which were thoughtful and delightful . Even the dog was super friendly. The surrounding area was beautiful and there were lots of things to do and places to visit. The property has a fabulous huge garden with plenty of places to sit, eat and lie in the sun. We really enjoyed it and would recommend it for perfect holiday.

Brilliant Holiday
We had a great stay with Sandra and Paul and spent as much time in their beautiful garden as we did in the cottage. Nothing was too much trouble and we really appreciated Sandra booking the vet appointment for our dog. It was so peaceful and relaxing and we would definitely recommend it.
My only regret is that I didn't check the time of our ferry more carefully and we wouldn't have had to leave in the middle of the night after all!
Best wishes to you both (and Barnabe). Sharon, Tony & Floyd

Beautiful gite and lovely hosts
Small but really clean and well presented with every facility you could want: comfortable bed, great shower, lovely garden and, if the weather is bad (yes, that did happen, sadly), a dvd library to rival Netflix. Sandra and Paul are really friendly and helpful if required and Barney's cheerful wag always put a smile on our faces when we got back.

Pretty, peaceful and relaxing !!!!
The cottage is beutiful and done to such a great standard. Paul and Sandra are such lovely hosts and willing to help us with anything during our stay. The restaurant they recommended and booked for our wedding anniversary was first class. The surrounding towns are pretty and peaceful. This place will certainly makes you wind down and relax for the week. Hope to return again one day. Thank you Olivia , Neil and Hugo 🐾 Xx

Absolutely Outstanding
We absolutely loved our stay at Le Vieux Fournil. It is the best self catering house we have ever stayed in. We were greeted by our fantastic hosts Sandra, Paul and Barney (the dog) on arrival. We are given a tour of Le Vieux Fournil and the rooms were outstanding (the attention to detail was amazing). The fire was on, meaning it was warm and cosy and house was very well equipped and beautiful. All this and located perfectly for views of the countryside with lots of peace and quiet. Paul and Sandra were amazing throughout our stay and were on hand whenever we needed anything. We can’t recommend Le Vieux Fournil highly enough. The personal touches and friendly experience in a beautiful location – we loved it!
We are already looking at dates to come back.

Perfect place to escape it all.....
Perfect place to get away from it all, a real home away from home. Paul & Sandra are fantastic hosts who have tried to think of everything to make your stay more comfortable. They even went the extra mile by dropping us into the local village to celebrate our 1st wedding anniversary (and offered to pick us up although we decided to walk back to help digest our delicious lunch) and even booked our dog into the local vets to have his worming treatment in time for our journey home.
The private garden was a perfect space for our small dog to run around and a very tranquil setting to relax whilst waiting for the BBQ to warm up and the drinks to chill.
Would recommend for a lovely quiet getaway, whilst being in easy driving distance of loads of fantastic areas in which to explore France.

Charming traditional gite
Ideal for a couple seeking peace and quiet whilst exploring the beautiful local area. Facilities were first class. The weather wasn't good but knowing we were going back to a snug little gite for the evening and night was some comfort. Paul and Sandra were most helpful for local knowledge and any French language difficulties.

Outstanding
The bread oven was one of the best self catering houses we have seen. It shows what can be done with some modest effort and a lot of artistic flair. Chantrigne was an good centre with an extraordinary restaurant. Paul and Sandra (and Barney) were excellent hosts who clearly know what visitors want. To book for one week and extend our stay for two demonstrates our thoughts about the place and we will certainly be back

An ideal base for exploring Mayenne.
We enjoyed our stay with Sandra and Paul enormously. The Bread Oven was very comfortable, cosy, and beautifully furnished. The kitchen was well equipped and the shower magnificent.

Beautifully presented
The pictures when booking do not do this property justice, in the flesh this property is stunning and is set in a very quiet area. Far enough away from civilisation to be peaceful but not too far away that you need to travel great distances to see do anything.
The owners live only a very short distance away but you would never know, they are discreet and give you your space but are there if you need anything.
The property has everything you need for self catering but if I had one complaint it would be the unpredictability of the internet, it can take an age to get on just to check Facebook or keep in touch with friends. Whilst it is not a reason to not stay at this beautiful place I think people should know it is not what you get in the UK.
Overall this is a great place to locate whilst visiting other parts of France and I would definitely stay again and have no hesitation in recommending to family and friends.

Le Vieux Fournil – No need to look any further, th
We booked Le Vieux Fournil for the week of our 30th wedding anniversary. We’d been looking for something quiet and peaceful without being too remote. We’re glad we chose Le Vieux Fournil because it is truly beautiful. On arrival we were met by Paul and Sandra who made us feel very welcome and showed us our home for the week.
The Cottage is beautiful and the levels of detail and use of stone and material are perfection. The gardens are beautiful and the surrounding fields go on as far as the eye can see.
There are plenty of towns within easy reach and the roads we’re mostly quiet. For a meal out we recommend La Terrasse in Rue des Casino, Bagnoles-de-l’orne (Lamb shank and beef cheeks both very nice).
Paul and Sandra are perfect hosts and made our anniversary very special.

Perfect in every way - highly recommended
We happened across this beautiful place on the Internet by chance.... it looked ideal and very reasonably priced. We enjoyed a very simple journey across France with very good directions provided by the owners. We were given a very warm and friendly welcome when we arrived and realised immediately that this had in deed been a very lucky find - everything was perfect! The cottage was spotlessly clean, smelt beautifully fresh, fantastically equipped, an outstanding location, comfy bed with good quality linen, snowy white towels and a wonderful shower!! Sandra and Paul have worked incredibly hard to provide an idyllic and perfect holiday retreat. The attention to detail is second to none and we will definitely be back. Thank you both so much for providing the quick break that we both so desperately needed - it was so peaceful and we left feeling completely refreshed. Recommended for couples (with a car!). A quiet and tranquil location but only a few miles from everything you need.

Charming little hide-away.
We’ve just returned from a wonderful week at this lovely little gite. It’s the perfect hide-away for a peaceful break.
The gite itself is charming and Sandra and Paul have put a lot of love and attention to detail into making this a perfect retreat. It is so clean and neat and they provide everything you could possibly need for a very comfortable stay. The information guide isn’t just a handful of brochures (although there are plenty in a separate folder) but a beautifully presented coffee table album that tells you everything about the gite, the area, places of interest and recommended places the eat. It gets 10 out of 10 for presentation. On a rainy day or in the evening you can settle down to watch a DVD from their library - again top marks for presentation; DVDs in alphabetical order and categorised.
This is their one bedroom gite and my only concern before we arrived was that it might be too small as I don’t travel light, especially when taking the car but we had more than enough room.
The fabulous shower room has plenty room for toiletries and the bedroom is deceptively spacious with a lovely dressing table (inside one of the drawers you’ll find a sewing kit and mini first aid kit). For anyone of a like mind, if there’s enough room for my bags of make-up and lotions you needn't worry about space. The bed was also very comfortable.
The garden was just a delight to relax in and the scent of honeysuckle round the door was amazing.
I would definitely recommend sampling lunch the French way - allow up to 2 hours for 4/5 courses. Our two favourite places to eat were at opposite ends of the spectrum:
The Bar and Restaurant at Chantrigne is exceptional value for money - a 5 course meal including a litre of wine or cider plus coffee for 11.50. It’s plain fayre but excellent food. It’s popular with local workmen and other locals which is a good sign. There’s no menu and you use the same plate for all courses apart from the desert but that’s all part of the experience.
If you’re looking for something a bit more refined then we highly recommend the silver service at the Bois Joli in Bagnoles De L’Orne. Service is first class and the food is worthy of its Michelin star recommendation.
We would highly recommend staying at La Gautrie - 5 star accommodation in a beautiful part of the country with exceptional hosts.

Perfect Peace!
Our second visit to The Bread Oven and it`s just a lovely as before. Home from home just doesn`t do it justice, its well equipped, clean and very cosy, with a shower to die for! Paul and Sandra are very welcoming, as is Barney! We spent half of our time cycling the quiet lanes, stopping often to enjoy the views and the wildlife. The other half spent relaxing in the peace of the garden, enjoying the sounds of nature all around. If you need a place to just chill out, this is the place to do it. The boulangerie in Chantringne is great and the people very friendly. We thoroughly recommend it. Lassay Les Chateaux is a wonder for a stroll down lots of little side streets, and of course the chateau. We have had the most relaxing holidays here and are already looking forward to coming back.

Truly Charming
My boyfriend and I have just just left this amazing place and we honestly couldn't have picked a better place to spend the week. Paul and Sandra are indeed perfect hosts and everything at Le Vieux Fournil is to put it simply, splendid.
Our bakehouse had everything we needed to make our stay in France absolutely perfect.
The weather was extremely hot for September, roughly 28 degrees daily which meant we were able to fully use the extra facilities provided by La Gautrie that you just couldn't find in a hotel. The use of our own private garden including furniture, a couple of deck chairs for soaking up the sun and a barbecue. We even loved the provided shelter for our car meaning that on those hot summer days our car wasn't sat baking away in the sun.
Inside our property was just as beautiful as the scenery around us, every little detail thought of and carried out till perfection. Our welcoming package was perfect after a long travel down from Calais we were delighted to find that we had been provided with all the essentials including bread, butter and homemade jam for a evening snack before retiring to bed.
My favourite thing however about Le Vieux Fournil was the shower. The shower never failed. The shower head was a huge waterfall affect affair with the water was always hot. I never wanted to get out. Once I showered twice in one day just because it was such a pleasant experience. Alongside this Sandra and Paul had placed our names in the holders on towel hooks on the back of the door. A minor but personal touch, they really do care about your stay.
Theres so much to say about this amazing place. Book it you won't regret a single thing, just remember your car!
