A large property in a good location with easy access to the beautiful town of Josselin and the river for peaceful walks. Great parking. The cottage is well equipped but is a little “tired”. The weather was not good when we were there and we found the cottage a bit cold, though heaters were available. Two large trees outside the kitchen did block the light, sunshine and view of the garden which I thought was a pity. However, we enjoyed our stay and Joyce, our host, was lovely and nothing was too much trouble, it was a pleasure to have met her.

Quiet and relaxing with easy walking along the Brest Canal, lots of benches to sit on and watch the world go by, before walking up to the chateau and restaurants. Great!

Lovely house in lovely area.
Lovely house in lovely area.
Stayed for nine days at this property. It’s a lovely house attached to the owners house, the location is perfect, just a short walk, along the most picturesque canal, takes you into the town. The large garden at the house is lovely and peaceful. The owner is a lovely lady, she is very welcoming and always happy to help with any enquiries you might have, she is very knowledgeable of the area, and she is very happy to share her knowledge. We definitely plan to go back next year. Jackie

Lovely walk to medieval town, the cottage is very quirky and old but homely.
Joyce is a lovely and welcoming lady
Due to my husbands disability he was unable to use either of the bathrooms so If the downstairs bath was changed to a shower we would love to come again

Josselin cottage with access to towpath to town
Josselin cottage with access to towpath to town
The cottage was quirky, homely and comfortable with a well equipped kitchen. We were very lucky with the weather and enjoyed the large garden, with direct access to the towpath into Josselin with its many restaurants and good weekly market. There is a good supermarket within five minutes easy drive for stocking up the large Miele fridge freezer. Joyce is a very nice lady who, whilst being on hand to help with any info required, did not intrude on our privacy at all. Her
three large, but friendly dozy dogs and three cats were, as we are animal lovers, a pleasure to have around. The dogs were confined to the front of the house and could hardly be bothered to get up to greet us, and the cats though friendly, were easily deterred. None of the animals ever came into the cottage.
We would comment on the one very adverse previous review that it was unduly harsh and unfair in our opinion.

Great Gite, the photos definitely don't do this Gite justice. The rooms we're clean and comfortable, and the cottage kitchen is a delight with everything you could need and there was always hot water. The walled garden is a delight, in fact we spent most of our time here, as the weather was fantastic. The host Joyce was very friendly and her knowledge of the area was invaluable.. The walk into Josselin along the canal path was pleasure. Infact with the 3 beautiful cats it was almost home from home. We will be going back, sooner rather than later.

For the 3rd year running a friend and i stayed at the self catering Riverside Cottage known as Belle Rive but we have never reviewed it and this year felt that we should. The accommodation has a home from home atmosphere. Our bedrooms were extremely spacious and clean, well furnished and the beds very comfortable. The shower can be a little "quirky" but the landlady, who lives on site is most helpful and you only have to ask if there is a problem. The sitting room is extremely cosy. Guests have full use of the garden which is well provided with furniture and is a relaxing way to recover from a day's sightseeing!
The cottage is thoroughly recommended for friends travelling together, for families and for respite when on a longer, more exacting journey. There is room for privacy when en famille.
A beautiful cottage in a charming location with a lovely garden, maybe you will get the sunshine too. The prices are very reasonable for a three bedroomed gite in a fantastic location.
In conclusion the cottage is a delight and we fully intend to stay again in 2013. Thoroughly recommended and pleasant hosts as well."

Excellent location, spacious,comfortable cottage
Excellent location, spacious,comfortable cottage
The cottage was perfectly situated for enjoying Josselin and the surrounding area-a few minutes stroll into the beautiful town centre with its shops, restaurants and bars and yet in a stunning peaceful spot. My husband loved being able to get straight onto the riverbank from the garden to do a little fishing in the evenings. The walled garden is lovely and very private-we appreciated the badminton net and racquets!
The cottage itself is really spacious, with big bedrooms and a good sized kitchen and lounge. We found the cottage clean and the beds were comfortable. If you're looking for designer furnishings, wet rooms and a pool, etc., this is probably not the place for you. If you're looking for a clean comfortable cottage in a lovely location, you can't go far wrong.
The owner was very helpful, providing useful information on weather, local attractions etc.
Josselin itself is a lovely town. We hired bikes for a couple of days and there are plenty of planned and graded routes to follow. We really enjoyed seeing the countryside and pretty villages in this way. Carnac beach was a hit with the boys, as was Etel where they jumped about in the impressive waves.
There is loads to do/see in the area and the cottage itself makes an excellent base for seeing this part of France. We'd have no hesitation in recommending this to our friends/family and hope to visit again one day.

Could do better
Could do better
Upon entering the unwelcoming hallway I was tempted to get back in the car immediately. The cottage was frankly a mess, shabby without the chic. The ground floor bedroom smelled of damp. The living room was comfortable, if a little gloomy. We wondered why the fitted carpet didn't reach the wall under the windows.
Of the two bathrooms the downstairs one was dingy with awful carpet tiles that weren't helped by whatever caused the lavatory to flood on day one. The upstairs one was bright, which showed off the mismatched suite to good effect. Water pressure was good, though the shower handset was split and squirted. The hot tap packed up on day one but was replaced quickly. The shower riser bar was barely affixed to the wall and the shower screen flimsy. Unsure when the mirrors were last properly cleaned, I cleaned them.
The kitchen was unspeakable. Units with rusted handles; an old fridge, pitted with rust; an elderly dishwasher; badly cracked and chipped floor tiles. Worktops were clean, apart from a granite slab which had a good film of dust; the coffee maker was filthy; inside the cupboards were dirty, the drawers not much better. A cobwebby fire blanket in a dusty old plastic cover about summed it up.
For the final clean up, if you opt to do it yourself, there is a Dyson, held together with gaffer tape. It has virtually no suction because the filter hasn't been cleaned in a long while. There was an ironing board that I would be ashamed to throw onto the council tip.
The good news? The spacious garden was lovely, just as well as it was much utilised during some fine weather. There was a pavilion with teak table and chairs and sun loungers. We washed the table each morning as some of the cats liked to lie on it. 6 in all, invasive, total pests especially when we ate outside. The area by our kitchen door was pussy toilet. 3 large, amiable dogs patrolled the front of the house.
In an hotel when things aren't up to par, you complain and give the staff the chance to remedy matters. Yes, the dodgy tap, flooded loo and a duff lightbulb - does nobody check in advance? - were speedily attended to, but we felt that confrontation on day one over the lack of cleanliness and overall sloppy presentation of the cottage would have created an unacceptable atmosphere between ourselves and the owners. For a 3 week stay this was never an option.
The location however was superb, Josselin is a joy, the canal side walk a treat. And we did enjoy lounging in the garden.

Fantastic place for a family holiday
Fantastic place for a family holiday
I would recommend this cottage to other families who want a place to stay where they can relax in the either inside or outside in the spacious garden. Me, my husband and three daughters (aged 11, 16 and 18 years) all enjoyed what the house and local area has to offer.
We spent quite a bit of time in the beautiful garden under the gazebo (the table, chairs and gazebo have seen on the picture have been replaced with nicer wooden ones than those seen in the picture) both during the day and in the evening when the lighting is quite magical.
The teenage girls were very impressed with the spacious bedrooms and the comfortable beds. All the rooms are a good size with plenty of space to spread out. The furniture generally has plenty of character and sturdy enough to survive our visit. I found the downstairs bathroom and bedroom useful as I struggle getting upstairs.
Our favourite days out were to see the Poète Ferrailleur Automata Sculptures, the beach at Carnac, the Prehistoric Stones also at Carnac and Zoo Pont de Scorff. Josselin's town market was enjoyed by the teenagers, my husband enjoyed Josselin Chateau and the girls all enjoyed the doll museum. My favourite bit was relaxing in the garden with a glass of wine.
The girls had a memorable day on the river the the canoes provided. The walk down to the river from the back of the house into town is relaxing stroll with lovely views of the chateau and town.
The food you can get locally is fantastic and we made daily trips to the boulangerie which does bagettes that can't be beat, coupled with cheese from the market that makes my mouth water just thinking about it. The seaside restaurant we ate at served delicious seafood and pizzas which suited everyone at a reasonal price.
The owners Joyce and John were very friendly and helpful and sorted out the missing roasting tray, when the boulangerie is open, how to get to various places, infact answer any questions you may have.
All in all the cottage, garden, friendly helpful owners and local places to visit made for a relaxing and memorable holiday.

Great Week
Great Week
This property has everything for a short to medium break. Apart from the quirky look - 16th Century to 20th - the accommodation is roomy with enough facilities for 2 or more families.
Its location right on the edge of Josselin doesn't cause any major problems, as access to town via the canal path is about 10 minutes; and a very pleasant walk it is.
We were welcomed by the owners and their 3 large dogs - don't be put off, they are really pussy cats (and there are some of those too!) - and given the grand tour. The owners live on site so if there are any problems they are on hand to help.
There are may interessting places in the area, including the Lac du Duc outside Ploermel and the Astronomical Clock in Ploermel itself - well worth a visit.
This is a charming place to stay, with a good garden to relax in, excellent access to town and other places and friendly hosts. We will certainly be back!

We had a lovely stay in Josselin. The cottage was better than it appears in the pictures with plenty of space inside and out (great for the kids). We were well by Joyce and John who were friendly, helpful and welcoming. Josselin is a lovely town with a good baker and butchers within walking distance. The house is right beside the river which has beautiful walks and picnic aras.

A very relaxing time in a charming location
A very relaxing time in a charming location
We had a very pleasant week here. The location is so good - a ten minute stroll along the towpath to the town, and Josselin itself is charming and peaceful but still a working town.
This is a proper holiday cottage for a family or group, a place to sprawl and relax. It is not a twee and over-decorated B&B where you are afraid to move lest you knock something over, and where you need to keep your children on a leash - it is a place to slump down in a chair with a cup of tea or a glass of wine and a detective story (and there is a fair library of easy holiday reading in the cottage, and a fine English bookshop in the town). Or to sit around the kitchen table and argue about how little to do tomorrow. The washing machine was a trifle idiosyncratic and may need to be shot soon, but everything worked. The beds were comfortable. The architecture is not entirely uniform, but that contributes to the holiday house atmosphere. The weather was fine, so we did not have to test the heating and cannot comment on that. Badminton in the garden was a high point with the children (you might bring some shuttlecocks as we wore them all out).
Joyce was very kind and helpful, and understood the complications of coming from the other side of the world.
We took a train from Paris to Rennes and then a car, which worked well (navigation was easy, simple directions, double highway all the way, although Rennes itself needs a bit of map reading). The car was necessary - to get there, for supermarket shopping, and for touring. There is a small general store a short walk along the road into town and all the usual shops and bars and restaurants in the town, so you can ignore the car for a day or two if you want to. The English tour of the Chateau is worth doing, and for a bit of walking (or jogging if you must), the tow path is ideal - it goes for miles in both directions and mostly you have it pretty much to yourself.
We would certainly recommend the cottage to friends, both for its relaxing and unpretentious atmosphere, and for the welcome. Indeed, we chose it ahead of its final rival on our short list because Joyce sent such a friendly response to our first enquiry. We would happily stay there again.

Riverside Cottage Josselin
Riverside Cottage Josselin
Great place to stay: - near the town which is exceedingly pretty but also very quiet. Safe place for children as the garden is walled in. (and it is a lovely garden) Also for children there is the attraction of 3 dogs and no less than 8 cats (at the time of our visit 3 kittens).
The house is more spacious than you get a feel for in the pictures, particularly the bedrooms. The sitting room is a bit dark and gloomy however, and has no TV (it only can be used for watching videos). That is the only criticism.
The owners were very pleasant and friendly.
Generally I would recommend this property and would go back.

We loved the house and the location, by the river and within a beautiful walking distance from lovely Josselin. The garden was wonderful. The house is like your grandmother's house, full of character, but it does need a little bit of refreshing and a good scrub. Great communication with Joyce.
