About this house rental

If you are looking for a special rural escape in la France profonde Le Laurier is the perfect location. Set in the heart of the Diege valley in south west France surrounded by farms, rivers and woodland, the charming 19th century barn offers extremely comfortable accommodation for two people. On the first floor a large sitting room with deep comfortable sofas, an extensive library of books, DVDs and music CDs. The pretty mezzanine bedroom has a king size bed, with 100% cotton bedding and plenty of hanging space and shelving plus an air conditioning unit. On the ground floor there is a bright fully equipped kitchen and a shower room and toilet. The mature garden is full of secluded places to sit and read, or doze with sun loungers and a garden shower. Guests are invited to help themselves to produce from the organic potager and tiny orchard. After a day of discovery - there are many medieval towns and villages, vineyards, markets and a stunning river-laced valley to explore - stretch out on the wisteria-draped terrace and enjoy a pre-dinner drink.

Last summer we returned to The Barn for our second visit. It was as perfect as the first time we went. We can only reiterate what we said in our previous review, it is first class. If you like comfort, space, style and seclusion in beautiful surroundings you would find it very hard to better Le Laurier. Kathryn and John have put immense thought and care into providing everything you could want for the perfect stay. For the duration of our holiday Le Laurier’s Barn and gardens felt like our own home rather than a holiday home. With wonderful places to go and visit, lovely walks to take from the gate or perfect peace and relaxation without going anywhere, The Barn is a real gem, Kathryn and John the perfect hosts. We have just booked our third holiday there, this time for two weeks.

We stayed in this lovely gite from 10-17 September 2016. The property is in a small hamlet situated in stunning countryside. The beautifully decorated and stylish accommodation is in a double-storied stone barn situated in a lovely garden and had everything we needed; it was so lovely you could have happily moved in and lived there for ever! The extremely well-stocked kitchen is on the ground floor, as is the bathroom. On the upper floor is a huge living room full of comfy sofas and a wall of books and dvds, and the bedroom is on a mezzanine floor which looks out over the roofs of the property and the surrounding countryside. There’s a pergola in the garden where you can eat your meals and have drinks in the shade, or you can use the chairs and swing hammock if you like to sit in the sun. It was a real pleasure for us to meet Kathryn and John who could not have been more helpful and friendly. We arrived at the end of a very long, hot day feeling extremely tired and frustrated after a long journey, to be greeted with tea and hot showers and a lovely light meal of homemade quiche and salad. We visited the market in the nearby small town of Villeneuve, we went to Villefranche-de-Rouergue which we pretty much had to ourselves (it was Monday and everything was closed). We also visited the beautiful village of Belcastel and went to Rodez in the afternoon. The books in the gite came into their own when it rained all day on Wednesday, though it didn’t stop us going for a local walk where the only person we met was a lady looking for her lost cat. We also had lunch in Figeac and visited the Champollion Museum and explored the old town. A week is not long enough to explore everything this area has to offer, we were extremely sad to leave, and we would definitely like to stay here again. Thank you Kathryn and John for a wonderful week, your warmth and friendliness make this a special place. Anne and Ken, Yorkshire

    A prefect rural paradise

The warmth of John and Kathryn's welcome, especially the welcome supper; the discrete but valuable advice about places (especially gardens) to visit; the excellent clean facilities all made this a perfect place to holiday. The icing on the cake was the splendid walking from the door and further afield, the local markets and the villages. At the end of the day John and Kathryn's garden is the an idyllic place to relax. If you enjoy rural life look no further - this is the place to stay! A fortnight is not long enough and we very much hope to return.

    A perfect find

The Barn at Le Laurier is very special. We spent a week there in September and found everything to be as lovely as the previous reviews suggest, or even more so. The Barn is in the grounds of the owners’ house. It has a feeling of space and light, is well laid out, furnished with care and consideration in a style that wouldn’t be out of place on the pages of Country Living magazine and everything that you could possibly need for your stay has been thoughtfully provided together with many extras that you hadn’t thought of. There are so many little touches and details that you never find in holiday accommodation that make it the perfect home. The result is comfortable and welcoming and we felt relaxed and as though we belonged there from the moment Kathryn showed us around. The outside space is equally appealing and just as inviting with plenty of spots to sit or laze in the sun or shade. The large covered terrace also kept us dry during a shower, if we preferred to sit and look at the lovely garden with cup or glass in hand, rather than retreat into the barn with its extensive library, DVD collection, and other attractions. . The weather for our week in September wasn’t perfect and we had more rain than was usual for that time but it didn’t spoil our holiday because Le Laurier is such a lovely place to be. Kathryn and John couldn’t be kinder, friendlier or more considerate and Lottie is a delight. They are so generous with their garden, their time and their ideas and suggestions for places to visit but, unless we wanted to ask them something, they left us alone to pretend that we lived there! They are the perfect hosts providing superb accommodation set in a beautiful country garden in the peaceful French countryside and allowing their guests to treat it as their own home for the duration of their holiday In summary, we had a wonderful holiday and hope to return again next year to see Le Laurier in a different season. If you want a peaceful and relaxing holiday in a delightful gÎte, set in beautiful countryside then we can’t recommend Le Laurier enough. Trish and Dave.

    A wonderful holiday home

We had the most wonderful stay at Le Laurier. The barn is beautiful, tastefully decorated and comfortably furnished. Everything you could possibly need is provided and if there was something else you needed, you only had to ask the lovely owners Kathryn and John. We felt very much at home from the moment we arrived. There were all kinds of wonderful home cooked goodies left for us so that we didn't have to think about shopping on the day we arrived. We quickly became friends with John and Kathryn over drinks on the beautiful terrace on our first evening and that set the tone for the whole holiday. They are delightful hosts, unobtrusive but always there to offer advice and suggestions for visits and will happily book restaurants for you. The property is in a very rural, secluded position but only a short drive away from a delightful medieval town with all the amenities you would need, including shops and restaurants. There is even a newly opened gallery by a famous French photographer which is certainly worth a look. A little further away are the towns of Figeac and Villefranche de Rouergue both of which are very interesting and have colourful markets. There are some incredibly beautiful medieval villages to explore within easy reach and in contrast we went to see the very modern Norman Foster viaduct at Millau, an incredible structure! We wouldn't hesitate to recommend a holiday at Le Laurier, a beautiful home from home, made extra special by the thoughtfulness and generosity of the lovely owners Kathryn and John and not forgetting the little scamp, Lottie, their terrier who we wanted to kidnap and bring home with us!

    Honeymoon in a tranquil paradise

The barn was everything we had hoped for our honeymoon. A beautiful place to relax after the excitement of the last few days and the most delightful hosts. The barn was spotless and tastefully decorated with a huge collection of books, CDs, and DVDs. There was a hugely welcome selection of goodies in the fridge on our arrival and our hosts even treated us to canapes and drinks on the terrace on our first night. Nothing was too much trouble for them and we were allowed to help ourselves from the herbs, fruit, and salad in the garden. The garden is a gorgeous place to while away some hours and there were plenty of pretty fortified villages, castles, french markets, and gorges to keep us occupied when we wanted to venture away from the house. Thank you Kathryn and John for a lovely stay.

We were introduced to this part of south west France about 5 years ago and try to make it to La Galaubie as often as possible. If you are looking for a great place to stay in one of Europe’s most un-spoilt countryside settings, then this is it. Thousands of acres of green countryside make this the perfect place to recharge and relax and it’s a paradise for the more active with endless bike and running trails. The only sounds that you will hear in this rural paradise are those of the local wildlife and farm animals. The barn is completely renovated and tastefully decorated with every amenity. There is a double reception room with two large sofas and a large loft with a king size bed on the 1st floor mezzanine. Alongside an impressive English language library there is a TV with over 700 English and European dvds. The kitchen has a large dining table and is well appointed. The property sits in a gorgeous garden and has a pergola where you can bbq and eat outside at a table that sits about 8. We became instant friends with the owners Kathryn and John and it’s their efforts that make us come back year after year. She is a great cook and you can typically strike a deal where she cooks for you. This proposition is serious value if you are a true foodie looking to explore south west French cuisine. We are from London (and Canada) and her cooking is on par with serious London dining including Lucio on Fulham Road, La Poule au Pot and other top bistro style restaurants like Aglio e Olio. As an over all holiday experience La Galaubie gets 10/10.
