About this house rental

This Chateau is located in the Orne, Lower Normandy, just two hours from Paris and Channel ports but a million miles from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Chateau de Courtomer was built for entertaining and was the family seat for Count Antoine de Saint-Simon, the Marquis de Courtomer. It was completed on the eve of the French Revolution. Today’s chateau stands on the vestiges of a medieval building dating back to the 11th century and, unusually, the chateau and the estate, (350 acres) remained in the same family for generations until it was bought and lovingly restored by Elisabeth Bonner, an American from New York. The estate still retains a working farm and our guests love to watch the cattle peacefully grazing in the fields that surround the park.
On entering the estate over the moat you will be transported back in time and the only sound you will hear is birdsong or the wind in the trees. As you walk through the glazed entrance doors to the reception hall you will be transported back to another era, an era of elegance and style. The ground floor rooms are filled with light, with sun pouring in through the huge windows. One room spills into another, a design feature that the French call 'en filade', inviting guests to explore....
Normandy is one of the gastronomic capitals of France and the kitchen is designed with catering in mind. It is fully equipped to cater for large groups as well as intimate affairs and it's big enough for all the family to help in meal preparation.

The large dining room overlooks the moat and farmland beyond and is lit with fine crystal chandeliers. From here, doors lead to the sitting room and library, which on cool mornings is warmed by a crackling log fire. All public rooms and en-suite bedrooms are centrally heated and offer fine, uninterrupted views over the park or farmland that surround the Chateau. If you get up early you will probably catch a glimpse of the deer or wild boar that live in the park. Our guests love the quality of the furnishings and beds and the fact that no one has to share a bathroom!
If you love al fresco dining as much as we do you will enjoy our outside dining areas. The terrace, in front of the Chateau, is dressed with tables, chairs, parasols and large barbeques to allow you and your guests to dine in style. We also provide a range of outside games and bicycles to explore the surrounding areas. They come in very handy for trips to the bakers in the morning to fetch warm bread and croissants. The village is just a five minute cycle ride away.
The estate is very private and can be exclusively yours, our minimum stay is three nights and our minimum price is based on 15 guests. Our prices are the same all year round so you will not be paying a premium for staying with us in the high season. We offer 24 hour, on site security and maintenance.
The property benefits from a professionally installed WIFI system throughout the estate and so is ideal for small seminars or workshops. The Orangerie, just a few minutes walk from the Chateau is designed with seminars, parties and informal dinners in mind. If you need more space our farmhouse, which has been recently renovated can offer an additional four bedrooms, all ensuite.
The Chateau can be enjoyed as a self-catered venue or we can organise additional support for guests who are looking for an increased level of attention during their stay. Additional services, which need to be pre-booked, can include on-site concierge, housekeeping, catering or private chef and special event management for celebrations such as weddings and family gatherings. We work with a number of talented vendors who will be pleased to provide you with a quote once you have briefed them as to your requirements.
The Orne is a rural area which has preserved traditional customs, values and ways of life, the passage of time is marked by the seasons. Courtomer village is just a few minutes away and offers a full range of local services, including a boulangerie, a cafe where you can enjoy a coffee or a simple lunch, a chemist and a very good mini supermarket. There are regular open-air markets in the village offering you a chance to meet local producers selling fresh, seasonal vegetables and a wide variety of cheeses.

Timeless Elegance!
Timeless Elegance!
Wow! Amazing...I am speechless as I write this review. Thank you to Heather and the Bonner Family for setting the stage- a celebration of a lifetime. Myself along with 12 other lovely ladies just returned home from Chateau Courtomer. We were celebrating my 50th Birthday and years of friendship. We arrived from all over the USA to this magical fairytale. We could have stayed for another month! 1 week is too short. It was so relaxing just lounging like royals. Everything exceed my expectations. From lazy evenings lounging and laughing under the stars to ping pong wars in the medieval cellar, you hardly need to leave the property to get a better picture of life in the Orne, my now favorite part of France. The entire property is filled with history and beauty. It is so nice to get away from the city. All of us ladies have spent several visits all over France, but Chateau Courtomer has to be my favorite. The Orne and Le Perche are riddled with beautiful little charming villages. We visited the Normandy D-Day beaches for the 75th Anniversary, Bayeux, the Cliffs of Étretat, and several nearby villages. Chef Franck and Aude provided a fabulous gourmet gala dinner which was a special treat. We were happy to meet several lovely people who live in Courtomer. Everyone was so welcoming. Heather was always a quick text away from answering any question we had. We are already discussing another visit to the Chateau. Merci Beaucoup!

Bucolic Normandy Countryside
Bucolic Normandy Countryside
My family and I stayed at the Chateau de Courtomer for a week. There were 11 of us spanning three generations. The Chateau is beautifully restored and quite homey. As several of us are cooks, we did a lot of our own meal preparation. We attended local markets in small towns and went sightseeing in several cities. But around the Chateau it is a quiet, out in the country feeling (complete with their own Limousine cattle). At night it is dark, so the stars put on a beautiful display. The grounds are charming and the rooms large and comfortable. It's a vacation we will always remember.

the most magical place
the most magical place
We had our wedding at the chateau and we could not have asked for a more magical experience. The Chateau itself has undergone major renovations and is simply a dream. Every detail of it is perfection. In addition, the hospitality and service we experienced was unlike any other. When we were in the process of booking, Mariah was amazing and ensured we had all the details clearly explained and so prompt to respond to any questions. Heather was an absolute gem before and during our stay. She ensured all our questions were answered and truly helped make sure we were worry-free during our weekend. and Everything related to billing was perfect! i'm already planning my 5 year anniversary to be at the Chateau again :) thank you for making our wedding a moment we will never forget.

The best deal in Europe
The best deal in Europe
I've stayed at Chateau de Courtomer four times in five years. Bringing a group of 15 means that the cost per person per day is cheaper than many Airbnb's to stay in an authentic 18th century castle, and even better, to have it all to yourself! I have never found a deal like this anywhere else in Europe. Absolutely a must for travelers who want a real French experience and enjoy the tranquility of the countryside. Even the most impressive 5-star hotels are a step down from this.

An unforgettable stay
An unforgettable stay
We stayed at the chateau over the New Year and had a wonderful time. Our group of 14 friends has a tradition of visiting chateaus for New Year and this was our fourth and the best we have found. The chateau is extremely well equipped - the kitchen was a particular joy to cook in - and perfect for parties. Our group enjoyed cocktails in the large living room, playing pool in the basement party room, and much more besides. The chateau was always warm (a rarity, believe me!) and the wifi worked perfectly throughout. Thank you so much and we hope to stay again!

Delightful place, delightful stay
Delightful place, delightful stay
There are some moments in life when you do not need to think about what happiness is, you just feel it. Courtomer is a place where such moments happen. We organized for Christmas time our family gathering of 28 people age from 8 to 88, and we all felt so much "at home" in the beautiful rooms of the chateau, that we did not want even to go out... Courtomer is more than just a holiday rental, it is about touching history in an intimate way, listening to piano music played on the Pleyel in the "grand salon", chatting with your loved ones close to the chimney in the library, walking in the green tenderness of the lawns in front of the house, and of course enjoying dinner together in the beautiful dining room. We cannot thank enough the Bonner family for the fantastic work they have done, renovating the chateau in a delightful way, not forgetting the comfort of modern life! (even if the cold and humid normand winter, you feel really warm inside...) The "check-in and check-out" procedures are very efficiently managed by Heather, and the French couple living in the small house near the chateau is very kind and helpful in case you need something. We would love coming again to Courtomer to live again such an experience, Philippe and Karina Cohen

C'est Magnifique!
C'est Magnifique!
C'est Magnifique! We were invited guests of the Host/Hostess, and couldn't have been more impressed. I've been "commuting" back and forth overseas for 50 years, and have experienced all sorts of travel experiences in Europe. This was a bit more than I'd expected, perhaps because the accoutrements were scaled to present day accommodations without losing the charm of the Chateau. The private bathrooms were divine (every bedroom has one), and there was no evidence of past mold/mildew as one might have reservations about. Very efficient, clean, cozy, - a true memorable, unforgettable experience for those who go out of their way for a unique experience. I felt like a movie star in such lush surroundings with so much privacy. Now, - Go!

wonderful
wonderful
We were a group of fifteen family members having a reunion. We picked Chateau de Courtomer for its location (close to French branch of the family) and the en-suite accommodation. We had high expectations, all of which were exceeded. The chateau interior and park are gorgeous, fantastically well equipped for large numbers but best of all a totally relaxing and comfortable environment. The village has everything you need and surrounding towns offer choices of supermarkets and restaurants. None of us knew this part of France and its understated beauty delighted us all. Communication with Halle was perfect. We have wonderful memories and souvenirs and we hope to come back..
