The host family, represented by Zakarya, Hamza and Mohamed, were very friendly and did everything to make you feel welcome and comfortable. The cob hut where we stayed was beautifully made and had a private bathroom. It was a bit warm in the night, so we had to sleep under wet towels, but that’s just being part of staying in the Sahara. There was also the possibility to sleep outside, which would’ve been recommendable temperature-wise, but being a family with two young children and so also wanting some privacy at night we chose not to. During the day the hut was cool and nice to stay, because it cooled off sufficiently in the early morning. The beds were very comfy and clean. The camp itself, approximately 7kms from the village of M’Hamid El Ghizlane and only reachable by 4x4, was really cosy and there was enough shaded space to relax. The view and environment were absolutely astonishing. The first day of our stay we chose to remain at the camp to take a rest from our drive from Marrakech by rented car the previous day. We explored the surroundings and had a beautiful experience climbing the sand dunes and taking in the environment of cob buildings and date palms. Breakfast, lunch and dinner were prepared by the cooks Ali and Habdin and were very good. The breakfast was diverse with flatbread, butter or cream cheese, eggs and different kinds of marmalade, tea, coffee and warm milk. Also, we could choose at what time we wanted to have breakfast, lunch or dinner. We could also give preferences for what kind of food we wanted to have for lunch and dinner, which was very forthcoming as they also served delicious vegetarian/vegan dishes. Lunch and dinner cost us (2 adults, 2 children) approximately 20€ per meal per day and was of the highest quality. Tea would be served whenever you asked. The hosts presented us with a range of activities we could choose from to more fully experience the Saharan desert.
The village of M’Hamid actually has a kind of sad history as the villagers previously lived from agriculture and whose livelihood was destroyed by the building of a dam, which has caused the river and the valley to dry out, making agriculture by irrigation impossible, leading to salinisation and desertification of the environment. The remnants of the past are clearly visible in the landscape as there are abandoned cob buildings, agricultural fields and some dying date palms to be seen. Now, the people have mostly become dependent on tourism to make a living. This in no way means that the people are pleading, as they are very proud and eager to introduce tourists to the environment they’re living in. We were happy to be able to support the community and hope the dam will soon be opened again, as Morocco progresses to get its electricity more from solar than from hydraulic power. We’ve felt very welcome and wish the people of M’Hamid and surroundings all the best!

Amazing place, best location and the kindest staff. We had the best time here. Unforgettable. Would highly recommend and would come back without hesitation if I'm ever back down there.

The place is beautiful. You are surrounded by dunes and it is really silent. The staff is really friendly and helpful. Looking to the stars from there was amazing :-)
There was no electricity at the bathroom and at my room at this time and no hot water. Actually both is there. Maybe I just had bad luck. For me it was OK.
