Woodbury Lodge – Amakhala Game Reserve

The location was stunning - set on the hillside overlooking the valley. We could see elephants walking down the hill and a variety of antelope grazing in the distance. It was so peaceful The lodges were lovely - so comfortable. It was cold during our visit and the heated blankets were on before we went to bed, making it really cosy to sleep. The food was delicious, and you could request alternatives e.g. for the children. The staff were so friendly and helpful. I would stay again in a heartbeat. The safari guides were so knowledgeable and gave us the best experiences on our game drives. I like that this is a private reserve and never felt too busy.

It would have been nice if one pool was heated so it could be used throughout the year, but this is a minor issue.

The staff that meet us were very nice. The lunch meal was only so so. The afternoon safari drive did not offer much substance as the drive drove down the same road 4-5 times. I felt the effort to locate the animals was lacking. The giraffe encounter was good. Next morning was better but the drive spend too much time on only a few animals.

The game drives with Jesse were excellent and informative.

The food. We expected a much higher quality of food for the price. Dinner one night was inedible (rump steak) and our first lunch was awful. (Pita bread which was impossible to cut). Really disappointed considering the price. Also, on our booking confirmation for two nights the conservation levy was R1100 and they wanted to charge us R1700.
