About this house rental

This beautifully-converted barn and traditional ‘Pigeonnier’ is the perfect way to immerse yourself in the tranquility of the French countryside. Less than 90 minutes from Bordeaux and only two miles from the historic ‘bastide’ fortress town of Monsegur, the property is ideal for families and small groups looking for a private, self-catered experience.

Set within seven acres and dating back to the mid-1800s, the recently-refurbished Pigionner looks out over the Dropt river valley and the vines of the award-winning Chateau La Tuilierie du Puy vineyard. Nestled in the heart of one of France’s most beloved wine regions, the property is an oasis of calm that’s only a moderate drive from famous market towns such as St Emilion and Bergerac.

Newly-fitted with air conditioning and radiant underfloor heating to ensure ideal temperatures at any time of year, the Pigeonnier’s private driveway, garden, and covered patio opens up into the heart of the converted barn, refurbished with adjoining fully-equipped kitchen, utility space, and WC. The master bedroom and en-suite bathroom remains quiet and cool even in the summer, and the pigeon tower itself is furnished with a twin bedroom that offers incredible views over the surrounding farmland, as well as its own toilet and bathroom facilities.

A swimming pool (11m x 4.5m) is attached to the owner’s neighboring property, and access is shared with Pigeonnier residents. A retractable cover keeps the water warm well into October (and even later for the truly brave!), while a shelter provides poolside shade from the midday sun in summer. Additional amenities, including wi-fi, a cot and mattress, high-chair, sun loungers, and outdoor table and chairs are provided. The nearby town of Monsegur has a pharmacy, supermarket, bars, cafes, and restaurants, hosts a weekly produce market year-round, and runs its famous ‘night market’ throughout the summer. Additional shops can be found in La Reole, a 20-minute drive from the property with direct rail connections to Bordeaux.

A staple of traditional French architecture rejuvenated with a modern twist, the Pigeonnier is a quiet retreat situated in some of the region’s most idyllic countryside and between its most thriving market towns. The perfect place to relax and drink in both France’s natural beauty and its most beloved export, the property is a tranquil base to allow you to enjoy the countryside whatever way you choose.

My husband and I stayed here for a week and had a thoroughly enjoyable and relaxing time. We were looking for the peace and quiet of the French countryside and we certainly found it here. Set on a hill with gorgeous views of the surrounding valley, the gîte itself has been beautifully designed to include all the comforts of home and more. We like to cook most of our meals and found the kitchen to be very spacious and well-equipped for this purpose. Theres a large dining table inside as well as one on the patio. We really enjoyed being able to eat outside when the weather permitted. The pool provides a refreshing and relaxing way to spend the afternoon when not out and about or when you return from an adventure and need to cool off. The master bedroom is very large with a comfortable bed and spacious en-suite bathroom including a tub and a separate tiled shower. There is even a half-bath off the living room so others dont have to intrude on your personal space. Upstairs in the pigeon tower is another well-designed bathroom and two single beds. We did not need to make use of this space, but it would be perfect for a family with two children or even teenagers. One of the gîtes unique features is the underfloor heating and cooling system. Since we were traveling during a bit of a heat wave, we really appreciated this. We were cool and comfortable throughout our stay.If you stay here during the summer, make sure to check out the Marché Nocturne (night market) on Wednesdays in nearby Monségur. We enjoyed being able to share a small part of local French culture. There are many food stalls from which you can purchase your dinner and plenty of covered seating where you can listen enjoy live music and dancing. If you prefer, you can have dinner at one of the restaurants surrounding the square. We chose Le Grand Cep and were extremely pleased with the very reasonably priced gourmet menu that was served in the style of a 5-star restaurant. It was absolutely delicious! Our host, Nicole, did everything to make our stay pleasant. She checked on us often to see whether or not we needed anything, but was not instrusive. This was probably our best of many gîte experiences yet. We would not hesitate to stay here again.
