Tsuganoki

The facilities, the staff, the food experience and location are excellent. Our room had more that we could had expected. The staff was super helpful to explain how to use the facilities and how to experience the Japanese meal and breakfast properly. There’s also a minivan provided by the hotel to reach out the train station.

The only thing missing, and is a small thing, is a chrome cast to cast a movie to the TV (maybe if you want to see a movie and have a romantic night) And nothing to be with the hotel, but most of the attractions nearby are in Nikko (a different train station) so be aware when booking for your daily plans

Very friendly staff at this hotel. Private onsen on the room balcony. Excellent evening meal and breakfast of traditional Japanese cuisine. Shuttle bus available.

I absolutely loved the open-air bath, although I initially thought it would have onsen water. It was amazing that the water's temperature is maintained at all times. It had gotten to hot at some point and I had to ask the staff to adjust it.

The building was a bit run-down, and the rooms just felt old and not super clean. I had someone from the station call the hotel to pick us up, but they told us the shuttle service from the train station was only from after check-out and they wouldn't accommodate when we arrived earlier. While this was reasonable, we saw the shuttle pass us on our walk to the ryokan as they were dropping off people. I felt snubbed and it left a stain on the rest of the stay. The service was mostly friendly, but the meals felt rushed and there was little care to attention. The food itself was also not great, which I was really disappointed about, as the kaiseki meals are such a big part of a ryokan stay. Dinner was really lackluster, but breakfast was slightly better. The fish served during both meals were dry, cold, and too salty. Most of the food lacked flavor, while they were nicely presented.
