It is convenient to downtown and it has character and charm
Sometime there is no hot water

The downtown location made for easy walking.
The hotel is historic, but the upkeep could be improved. Others complained of water leaks on floors.

Location was great!! Loved the old fashion looking rooms. Walking distant to restaurants and shops. Breakfast was also amazing many choices. Staff was also friendly.
Would have loved a fridge in the room but we had our own ice chest. Hotel does offer ice vending machine.

It was in Sonora
Getting to our room was a maze of stairs and gates carrying luggage and at our age 68 and 70 was difficult and some what hazardous , parking was not convenient had to drive up a hill parking area fool of junk. 1 inch gap under door cold air blew in was freezing heater barely worked .

Since this location is an historical place. It was true as if we were living back when the Gunn Hotel was first built in the 1850's just decades later! I like vintage the outside esthetic was beautiful.
Purchased two rooms both doors have a top portion that splits open one room did not have the locks on the door so my daughter could not sleep. Because you can easily push those open and unlock the door from the outside and creep in! My room you could not use the A/C for the fan the vent looked like it had not been cleaned since the 1850's and made a very load and whining sound when on! Doors are very old so in order to make sure they are locked you have to really slam the door. So that sound was very amazing when trying to sleep in and trying to go to bed. The bed sheets had stains as well as the towels. I understand when it comes to historical places not much can be changed, but bed sheets, mattresses and room safety should be a priority if you want returning guest.

The property was downtown, very convenient location.
The cover sheets looked gross. The heater wasn’t working.

Character
Damaged and dirty rooms: holes in the walls, peeling wallpaper, dust and dirt everywhere, hairs in the bed and some weird glue mishap on the bathroom wall.

You have to park in the back and walk up the hill and in the morning the lights are off. It’s dark out there and the room is disgusting. There was hair in my bed in the shower. The shower don’t drain right they were supposed to bring a microwave and a refrigerator to my room that never did. That was the worst hotel I’ve ever ever stayed at.

I like to stay in historic (old) hotels, therefore I expect them to be pretty funky but full of charm. The Gunn House Hotel was just what I expected. Plus, someone had decorated for Halloween/fall and it was so cute! There are old books to borrow and read in the lobby as well as in the room. Bibles were there and I appreciated that!
Parking is a trick as the spaces are behind the building at the top of a very steep driveway. In the dark and for my first visit, it was a bit worrisome.
The room was quaint with antique furniture. The mattress was firm, just what I like. There is an old, deep bath tub which I enjoyed.
The breakfast was FABULOUS, served from 7:30-10:00. A very sweet breakfast room on the second floor with lots of tables and benches and chairs. It is "serve yourself" with coffee, tea, OJ. The plates are old and chipped (maybe from the 1850's? :) ) but charming. Homemade egg dish, four different cakes, fruit, bagels, muffins, cream cheese, waffle maker. No meat items but I didn't miss anything with all the options. No hovering person waiting to be sure I had the right to be there watching every move I made. There are eating areas outside on the second and third floors which was nice.
The rooms in the back upstairs were quiet. That was important because the hotel is on a loud, busy street.
There is a lovely pool area for the seasonal pool. The pool walls are green. Not sure if it is painted, old, or mossy. I probably would have used it had the weather been hot.
The price of the room plus breakfast was $60. Can't beat that!
Minor touch up repairs would be nice. ie. In room #19, glue down the bits of wallpaper that are peeling, spackle and paint the wall in the bathroom where the wallpaper is off, just little things that need a few hours and a caring handy person.
The tub was great, but under the shower door, the door tracks need to be cleaned and bleached. Not something you would see unless you were taking a bath.
I asked for a ground floor room because I am older and there is no elevator. Room #19 was given to me and he said it was just a few steps. It was actually down a little path, down some stairs and then up a few more. Just be aware that ground floor in the back isn't quite ground floor.

Everything! The "theme" of the place was great, got that feeling that I was transported to the past.
The breakfast was incredible: fresh baked bread and brownies.

Good location, restaurants & shops close by, fine for an overnight stay if you are not too fussy.
Swimming pool filthy, Sheets & towels dirty.

Very convenient, cute atmosphere.
Toilet did not flush properly, bathroom door did not shut, No plates at breakfast, very limited variety and quality.

Older converted property. Room nicely decorated and clean.
The property needs maintenance and some TLC and it would be fantastic. Ceiling tiles missing in dining room, window trim poorly painted, as much paint on glass as wood. Wood steps and thresholds need repair and painting. On the other hand, the rooms were clean and decorated, the staff was friendly, polite and helpful.

The historic property is a plus, and the room decor tried to honor that. I checked in late and there was some confusion at first, but the young man on the desk was kind and helped carry my bags to my room.
Toilet required several flushes to clear, no matter if it was just tissue from a sneeze. Peeling wallpaper.

Fabulous linens and a comfortable bed, clean and refreshing pool, complimentary toiletries, delightful European style breakfast in the historic salon, a very hospitable staff
this is an historic hotel with some age, so important that the rooms air out between guests

I will try to be objective,, I have stayed in the gunn house a number of times over the last 30 years and I have all ways had a positive experience until now,
I do not know how long the present management / owners have been running the hotel but I was disappointed with my experience on this occasion,
Previous comments from people claiming to have stayed in the Gunn house do not match my experience, the pool was in a very poor condition, it was in need of a good clean ,
the breakfast was not as described,
very little choice and late opening in the morning, ( States 07.30 but only started setting up around 07.45 )
my experience may have been the exception and I hope it will be improved,,
location I can also recommend the greek restaurant across the road from the hotel, they serve excellent Greek and American food,

We arrived a few hours before 3pm check in. They allowed us to change and swim in the pool and enjoy the pool area. Very refreshing pool but it needed a few umbrellas for shade and a few more chairs for guest. Our room #7 was great. It had a king bed located just off of the pool area and 50 feet to the breakfast room. We walked to downtown a few blocks away to have dinner. Several restaurants located near the hotel. The Gunn Hotel is a Historic building with character and charm. I will stay there again in the future.
The building is an Historic building which needs a few touch ups in paint.

Location downtown withing walking distance of many things. Ambiance outside room with benches and chairs among greenery. Historic aspect of the hotel.
There was a single person in the office when I arrived, and a family checking in ahead of me. Was about 20 minutes before I was able to speak to the lone employee. The gentleman at the desk had an accent that was a bit hard to understand, but we got through it. There was a large walk-in closet with an ironing board and iron, but no hangers. The A/C wall unit seemed to be struggling so I opened the front and the filter was clogged. Rubbed some fuzz away, and it was more efficient. During the night the A/C unit continued to cool beyond the set point, the thermostat part was not working. In the morning, when I went to take a shower, there was hair on the drain.

The breakfast didn't look very appealing, so we ate out instead.
I understand that this is a very old building, but it needs a lot of upgrades, the parking lot is dirt with ruts in it, the paint and wallpaper is peeling, rust around the plumbing and fixtures that don't fit the pipes, cracks in the tiles. Everything was unplugged in the room, so I felt they were worried about fires

Very old and could have been updated and still kept the historic look. Seemed. Like a old run down hotel

I know the property is old and that’s supposed to be part of its charm but that doesn’t exclude it from being clean. All external areas were dirty and uncared for, dead plants, filthy furniture, litter everywhere, just unusable. The room was a decent size as we were moved from a single queen (with a constantly running bath tap) to a double queen but there were stains / dirt on the pillows including one that looked like a drop of blood, ant infestation in the bathroom, bath unclean and generally just unsatisfactory. We did try to complain but nobody answered the bell on leaving, there was no way we were stopping for the paid for breakfast!!!

Can't beat the value and location. At the end of the main strip of Sonora, so easy to walk to restaurants. Harry does everything, from check in to getting breakfast set up in the morning. He also keeps a watchful eye over the property, providing a sense of security. Property has a certain quaintness and historic feel.
Parking requires going up a steep lane, on the left side of the entrance. Property may not be for everyone but you will love it if you are into vintage.

The location was the only thing good about this place.
Bed linen was dirty and stained. Breakfast was horrible. Roaches in the bathroom. I wouldn't even shower or brush my teeth in that bathroom. One person running the whole hotel. Very nice man but this place is a joke.

The location was good.
The toilet would not flush. The sink would not drain. The bathroom was infested with ants. The tile was cracked and moldy. The soap felt like chalk. The floors were dirty. There was no phone, no tissues, and approximately 10 squares of toilet paper. When i tried to turn in my room key, no one answered the bell. The atmosphere was garage sale grandma - old in a broken down, musty, horror film way.

If you are looking for a unique property this is a great stay. It was built in 1849 and our room was furnished with period antiques. Because it is a very old property it is not neat and new, but it has a lot of personality,(two rocking chairs and an antique table on the veranda out side our door over looking main street Sonora). Nice big swimming pool. Homemade breakfast in the old parlor. Out side seating in the pool area. If you are a history buff this is the place for you. I loved it, my wife not so much. The bed was an antique but the mattress was not, I slept great.
Because it is a 150+ year old converted home, it needs lots of work to maintain it. A lot of that work is still in progress.

Location was amazing! Cute old times vibe but out bedding was dirty and being on the main room it was noisy which made for a bad nights sleep. Also room advertised was listed $104 we paid $144 🫤

Didn't eat there because room was so awful
Everything was bad. Unacceptable. Checkin service was very slow. Room not ready when promised. Bath faucet ran constantly. AC didn't work and room was stifling. Towels looked dirty. Bathroom door was off hinges.

We loved the historic charm, and Harry was the best. He was kind and always available. Breakfast was delicious and had a personal touch to it. Loved the lemon cake! We plan to come regularly. Parking was great, pool was refreshing, walking distance to bars and restaurants. The rocking chairs out front was probably our favorite part.

Very little
Place is a dump. Loud. Breakfast was horrible. Towels were stained with brown spots.

This hotel is currently being renovated. The updated rooms are great, the rooms still in progress are what you would expect from an older hotel. Regardless, you can't beat the price for a historic hotel stay! The breakfast is a home cooked meal, it was fantastic. The internet is spotty and unreliable. But the location is centered in Historic Downtown Sonora, which is great for walkable food and shopping options.
The internet could be better in terms of reliability.

Staff was very friendly and Courteous. Great rooms with each having its own uniqueness. Breakfast was good and the dining area is in a very special historic area of the Hotel.
Will stay here every time we travel to Sonora CA.

I liked the location. That was it. I did not stay the night, I left during the night.
My room smelled like an old musty basement. I probably got the last room available of that day. The place is dark and dreary. Or I should say the location of my room was. I did not stay the night as planned I just lied on the bed in my clothes long enough to get a little sleep so I could drive home without dozing off on my drive.
