Bad experience all around. Do not recommend. We walked in and immediately smelled cigarette smoke. Counter staff checked us in and gave us key cards to a second floor room, but I had called earlier and asked if we could have a ground floor, so we had to get that changed. Counter staff didn’t give us any directions as to where to go. The hallway was dark and the carpet was stained and torn up. We got to our room, put the key in the door handle, and pushed the handle down, nothing. Felt like the dead bolt was locked. I tried again just to make sure I didn’t do something wrong. At this point I’m worried about walking in on someone or a guest coming out of the room mad at me because I’m trying to get in, so after two tries of not being able to get in, I go back to the desk. At this point my wife went back to our vehicle because we’re both tired and frustrated. We booked this hotel to break up a long drive and just wanted to rest. The front desk staff asks “did you try lifting the door handle?” like that’s a normal thing. Would have been nice to know that when we first went to the room that these doors work backwards compared to every other hotel on the planet. I walk into the room after lifting the door handle and immediately get blasted with smell. Couldn’t tell which was worse, the cigarette smoke or the chemical smell they used to try and cover it up. Nearly got a headache from the scentsations. Went BACK to the desk again and said that we’d like to cancel our stay. Counter staff didn’t ask why, didn’t try to rectify anything. They just said “okay,” and poked around on the computer for a minute. Then said “since you booked through a third party, you need to talk to them about a refund and cancelation.” I turn around and leave because I’m annoyed and ready to drive the rest of the four hours home because of how miserable an experience this was. On the way home, my wife starts a live chatting Agoda to see if we can potentially get our money back. Website is clunky and can’t see the whole chat well on a mobile phone, so I take care of it the next day, but already had an email saying that Agoda can’t do anything because the hotel denied my claim due to me not asking them to fix anything… cool. I’m ready to wash my hands of the situation and cut my losses, but then I look at my credit card statement just to see how much I actually paid for the room and see if it had gone through yet. I see a second charge from the hotel itself. So now I call them and find out that they charged me for a “no-show” fee. We were there, but decided that we didn’t want to breathe chemical cigarette cover up all night, so we left. Hardly a no-show to me. I put a case in with them so I can at least get THAT fee waived, which I still have yet to hear back from. Bad experience all around. Do not recommend.
