I was having breakfast alone and on a personal video call, with my phone set to the lowest possible volume. Suddenly, a man nearby started loudly telling me to use headphones, which I did not have with me. We are in a public space, and I was being considerate by keeping the volume minimal.
Shortly after, the front desk approached me in a rude manner and asked me to cancel my call because a couple complained. I was calmly minding my own business and was surprised by how confrontational the approach was. It felt unfair and targeted.
What concerned me most is that I then overheard racist comments suggesting that the noise was an issue simply because they could not understand what I was saying. In a public place, people make all kinds of sounds, children cry, people have in-person conversations, and the environment is naturally lively. I do not understand why I was singled out or treated with disrespect.
Overall, the interaction made me feel uncomfortable, judged, and discriminated against, despite my efforts to be polite and considerate.
