Chalet in British Columbia

About this chalet rental
C & C's Consummate Chalet is a detached single-family home in Sun Peaks, with no shared walls. It is our own house with only our personal belongings removed, so it is equipped the way a family home is, not the way a rental unit is. It is licensed for 10 guests in four bedrooms and is built for family groups and for several generations under one roof. We rent in the peak winter and summer seasons. The free resort shuttle stops 50 m below the house, at the junction of Creekside Way and Sunburst Drive, so cold, tired children can ride home from wherever they have skied. The nightly price shown includes the cleaning fee and all other fees; taxes are added at checkout.
CHRISTMAS DINNER FOR 10
The kitchen is set up to cook and serve a full holiday dinner, with a built-in convection oven, a microwave and a five-burner cooktop, and the dining table seats 10. The living, dining and kitchen area is one open space.
THE BACK YARD
The back yard is smooth grass, very gently sloping towards the trees, with a slightly steeper bank at the far end and to the right as you look from the house. It is not fenced and has no gates, and deer pass through. In winter it is not cleared of snow, so it is made for kids who would rather build than ski: snowmen, snow forts, igloos and sledding. The windows of the open living area are two storeys high and look onto the yard and the Mt Morrisey runs, so you can watch from the sofa with a hot drink. The yard is reached from the front door and down the steps.
The deck, at main-floor level and about 4 x 5 m, has lounge seating, a table, a patio umbrella and a large BBQ on the house gas supply, so there are no bottles to change. The deck is not part of the resort snow service and can be reached only through the house, so you clear it yourselves if you want to use it; a shovel is kept on the deck. Please clean the BBQ after each use.
The hot tub, which is yours for the stay and seats six, is at the side of the house: out the door, down the cleared path and down a flight of steps. The steps have a handrail but no lighting (the hot tub has its own lights). Please take care on the steps. Hot tub hours are 7 am to 10 pm.
SKI ACCESS, STATED PLAINLY
The Connector is the ski route to and from the house. It is a green run, usually groomed overnight, that collects several runs and continues on to the village day lodge.
Getting to the snow: turn right out of the drive and walk 300 m, slightly uphill, to where Sunburst Place meets Sunburst Drive, then take a short ski-down onto the Connector. If you would rather not walk uphill, turn left and walk 50 m downhill to the shuttle stop and take the shuttle to the ski area. The shuttle runs a circuit around the resort, a much wider area than the village alone, and if you are tired on Mt Morrisey it takes you home. Check the Sun Peaks website for the timetable for your dates.
Getting back: the best way is to leave the Connector at the turning signed Sunburst Estates. In all but thin snow it brings you to within 50 m of the house. The last stretch is a walk across a road, and if the road has been gritted we would not ski it. The turn-off is groomed intermittently, so conditions vary. Otherwise ride the shuttle home from the village.
On foot, the village day lodge is about 12 minutes (850 m) by the Connector or about 15 minutes (1.1 km) by road.
COMING IN FROM THE SNOW
Skis go on the racks in the garage and boots in the boot room. Wet things can go through the laundry area straight into the washer and dryer, then into the living area.
BEDS AND BATHROOMS
Four bedrooms and three bathrooms, licensed for 10 guests: a king with ensuite, two queens, and a bunk bed with a full XL on each level and guard rails on the bunks. The king ensuite and the upstairs bathroom (which also has a shower) have baths, and the main-floor bathroom has a shower. We kept two baths for children's bath time. Every bedroom has a good mattress, blackout curtains and warm duvets, and the ensuite has a heated towel rail.
The house has more bed space than that, including a pull-out sofa in the lounge, so a group can choose who sleeps where. The extra beds are for flexibility and do not raise the number of guests.
A pack-and-play, a high chair and baby monitors are in the house for little ones.
LIVING AND EVENINGS
There is a comfortable lounge with a 55-inch TV and a separate TV room with recliner seating for six and a 70-inch TV, so a film for the children and a quieter evening for the adults can happen at the same time. The TV room has a DVD player, DVDs, books and board games. The TVs have streaming apps, and you sign in with your own accounts. Basic TV service is included.
KEEPING COOL
The heat pump cools the upper two floors through the ducting. It is gentler than air conditioning, and portable fans are in the house. The lower TV room stays cool even in hot weather.
GETTING HERE
Sun Peaks has no fuel. The only fuel on the way up is at Heffley Creek, so arrive with a full tank and fill up there. Winter tyres or chains are required on most BC highways, including the roads to Sun Peaks, from 1 October to 30 April.
Finding the house: you arrive up the hill from the junction with Creekside Way; there is no access from the other end of Sunburst Drive. The street is unlit. The house is grey-blue, the second house on the right, after the log cabin. The house number is visible from the street, but not at night or when snow clearance is deep.
PARKING AND SNOW
The driveway is very large, but the municipal bylaw allows only five vehicles overnight, and that includes ours when we are in residence (we have two). We offer three for guests. If you are bringing more, tell us before you arrive and we will sort the parking out together; the resort's lot P5 is also available as overflow. From 1 November to 30 April there is no parking on any street in the municipality. The garage is for access, not guest parking.
A contractor clears the snow after a snowfall, and timing varies: it can be some hours after a heavy night's fall, so allow extra time. The resort plough often leaves a bank of snow across the front of the house. Cars parked together can be cleared around, and scattered cars cannot. Snow shovels are provided for the paths and for digging out a car. Ice cannot be guaranteed cleared anywhere in the resort because of the freeze-thaw climate, so take care on steps, paths and the driveway.
IF THE POWER GOES OUT
Outages here are infrequent, and we have never had one longer than 16 hours. The heating is gas. A backup battery keeps the gas boiler, pumps, hot water and lower-floor heating running, and the upper floors get some of that heat, with the gas fire there as backup. The gas fire works without power. High-draw circuits, including the electric stove and the hot tub, are not connected, so the large BBQ on the deck covers cooking: we have cooked dinner for ten on it during a power cut.
FIRE AND AIR SAFETY
There are five fire extinguishers (in the two upstairs bedrooms, the laundry room, the main bedroom and the TV room), serviced and in date. Smoke and carbon monoxide detection is one linked system, on house power with battery backup, with an alarm close to each gas fire. The house was assessed as compliant with short-term rental requirements. Bedrooms without ground-floor access have folding escape ladders.
STEPS AND ACCESS
This is not a step-free house, and we would rather say so plainly. It is not converted for accessibility, but everything a guest needs is on the main floor, which has the living area, kitchen, dining table, two bedrooms and two bathrooms, with no stairs once you are inside.
The driveway is gravel and covered in snow in winter, with no designated accessible space. The garage door opens straight off it and leads to the boot room, so you are under cover before you go in. From the garage there is a small threshold into the boot room, then a step up to the laundry area, which opens onto the main floor. The front door has two steps, and snow and ice vary from day to day, so we suggest the garage route in winter. We have no ramps, but you are welcome to bring your own. One shower is free-standing and works with a shower stool.
Some things to know. The main floor has tight corners in places, and we have not yet measured the doorways, so if you use a wheelchair please ask us before booking. The TV room is on the lower floor, two bedrooms and a bathroom are upstairs, and the back yard and the hot tub are down the front steps, so none of them is reachable without stairs or steps. There are handrails on the stairs.
WILDLIFE AND FOOD WASTE
Sun Peaks has bears and foxes, and a fed bear is a dead bear. Garbage stays inside, in the garage, and is never left outside, not even for a minute. Please also keep food and pet food off the deck and out of the yard. The transfer station is about 2 km away, and household garbage and recycling are free there.
A WELCOME
A small gift basket will be waiting for you.
GOOD NEIGHBOURS AND HOUSE RULES
The house is in a residential neighbourhood with a municipal Good Neighbour Bylaw, which is enforced more strictly on short-term rentals, and both guest and host can be fined. Our quiet hours are 10 pm to 7 am, hot tub included, with no music in the hot tub. Vehicles may idle for no more than 3 minutes. The minimum age to rent is 25. No pets (service animals are welcome), events or smoking. One exterior camera at the garage door records deliveries and faces outward. There are no cameras in the guest areas of the home.
We love having children in the house. When we are on the mountain we live in the suite, which has its own entrance, and the main house and the hot tub are yours. We keep a freezer in the garage, so we may pop in now and then. Our property manager and cleaning team look after the house, and you will receive their contact details before you arrive.
