THE AREA: BEACHES, MOUNTAINS, AND MORE
Barro is situated right between three of the most charming villages along this stretch of coast—Niembro and Celorio are both just a short walk or bike ride away, with the house located almost exactly halfway between them.
Nearby beaches:
- Barro Beach — 150 meters from the house, on foot
- Niembro Beach (Torimbia)—a quieter, less crowded cove just a few minutes away across the estuary
- Celorio and Borizu beaches, also just a few minutes away
Mountains and nature:
- Picos de Europa — Spain’s first national park, just a 25-minute drive away. Hiking trails for every skill level, the Fuente Dé aerial cableway, and high-mountain scenery right by the sea—a rare combination in the Cantabrian Mountains.
- Covadonga Lakes (Lake Enol and Lake Ercina) — located within the National Park itself, about 1 hour and 5 minutes away. One of Asturias’ most popular excursions (arrive early during peak season, as vehicle access is restricted).
- The Sierra del Cuera rises directly behind the coastline and is visible from the beach itself.
Towns worth visiting:
- Llanes — the nearest historic town, with its harbor, the San Pedro cliffside walk, and the colorful “Cubos de la Memoria” painted by Ibarrola. About 5 minutes away.
- Cangas de Onís — the former capital of the Kingdom of Asturias, known for its Roman bridge over the Sella River. A good base for exploring the Covadonga Lakes and experiencing the local cider culture. About 50 minutes away.
- Ribadesella — a seaside town with a wide beach at the mouth of the Sella River, prehistoric caves featuring rock art, and the famous canoe race held every August. About 30 minutes away.
Cities and airport:
- Gijón — about 50 minutes by car
- Oviedo — about 55 minutes by car
- Asturias Airport — about 1 hour and 10 minutes by car
Whether you’re here for a week of beaches and hiking, or a longer stay to truly unwind, Villa Playa de Barro puts the best of “Green Spain” within easy reach — without ever being far from home.
