French Street runs one block off the busy part of town, which turns out to be the whole trick. Main Street is three blocks away, close enough that dinner is a five-minute walk and far enough that the evenings stay quiet. The condo sits on the ground floor, unit 002, right where you come in from the heated underground garage. That detail matters more than it sounds like it should when you're hauling boots, bags and a day's worth of wet gear. Inside, the stone fireplace does most of the talking. It runs floor to ceiling, rough river rock the whole way up, with the sofa pulled in close and a TV within easy reach for the nights nobody wants to put a coat back on. The kitchen behind it is a real one: full-size range and refrigerator, dishwasher, toaster oven, and a coffeemaker that will be going long before anyone else is up. Bar seating runs along the counter for the people who hover while dinner comes together, and there's a small table by the window for when it's finally ready. The bedroom holds a queen and its own TV. Two queen sleeper sofas in the living room bring the total to six, which makes this an easy call for two couples, a small family, or a few friends splitting a ski week without splitting a mortgage. One bathroom, tub and shower, everything within a few steps of everything else. Slide open the door off the living room and the patio is yours: covered, private, looking out into the pines with the light going gold behind them around five o'clock. It's the coffee spot in the morning and the boot-off spot in the afternoon. When you want company, the building's shared hot tub sits on a big sun patio a short walk away, with a fire pit ringed by chairs and grills for anyone who'd rather cook outside. Ski and boot lockers keep the gear out of the entryway, and one space in the heated garage means you never scrape a windshield. You also may never need the car. The resort shuttle stops just outside and runs to Peak 9 and the other base areas, so the ski day starts with a short ride instead of a parking hunt. Carter Park and its sledding hill are a few blocks up the hill, the Blue River and the Riverwalk Center are a short stroll the other way, and Main Street's saloons, coffee shops and Victorian storefronts are close enough to wander without a plan.
