Some houses are for doing nothing. Wild Shores is for doing a little of everything. This five-bedroom, pet-friendly holiday house in Blairgowrie on the Mornington Peninsula has a solar-heated pool, a full-size tennis court and room for up to 12, just a four-minute walk from the ocean back beaches of Pearse's and Dimmicks.
THE HOUSE

Downstairs, the master suite has a walk-in robe, an ensuite and a view across the pool and garden, so it's a quiet place for a first coffee before anyone else is up. Next door, a second bedroom with two king singles suits older kids, a grandparent or anyone who prefers not to tackle the stairs. Upstairs, three more bedrooms share a family bathroom and a large rumpus room, a floor the kids and teens can claim for games, movies and a little independence.
INSIDE
The living space is built for gathering. A long dining table with extra bench seating means everyone eats together, and a deep L-shaped sofa faces a large smart TV. The kitchen is properly equipped for big-group cooking, with a dishwasher and a walk-in pantry. Coffee is taken seriously: a Nespresso machine for the quick cup, and a Breville caf-style machine for those who like a ritual.
Ducted heating, reverse-cycle heating and cooling, ceiling fans in every room and a gas log fire keep the house comfortable in every season. Linen, Wi-Fi and laundry facilities are included.
OUTSIDE
Outside, the solar-heated pool sits at the centre of the garden, with sun loungers and an alfresco dining area with a BBQ. Beyond it is the full-size tennis court with a basketball hoop, plus table tennis and a games room for the in-between hours.
THE NEIGHBOURHOOD
The beach track to Pearse's and Dimmicks is four minutes' walk from the front door. They sit within Mornington Peninsula National Park, so dogs aren't permitted there. These are wild ocean beaches, beautiful for long walks, rock pools and sea air, but not for casual swimming. For calm water, Blairgowrie's bay beaches are a short drive. The village has good coffee, a supermarket and casual dining, and Sorrento and Rye are both close.
LOCAL FAVOURITES
Sixteenth Beach General Store: about five minutes' drive, right across the road from the ocean beach. Fresh local produce and some of the best coffee around. Sit outside, or take a takeaway across to the sand.
Meat Heath, Blairgowrie: the long-standing village butcher, with ethically farmed meats and gourmet sausages made fresh on site. Our first stop before a barbecue night.
Loquat x Voodoo Lounge, Sorrento: modern Australian food built around local produce, with a Rolling Stones-themed bar inside. Book ahead, and call for groups of more than six.
FOR THE DOG
Dogs are welcome inside, and the large garden gives them room to explore. The ocean beaches nearby are national park, where dogs aren't allowed, but there's a leash-free dog beach on the bay at Camerons Bight, between Blairgowrie and Sorrento. Seasonal time restrictions can apply, so check the Shire's dog beach rules before you go.
Wild Shores sits in a natural dune environment, and snakes can be present, particularly in the warmer months. Snake deterrents are installed around the garden, but please supervise your dog whenever they're outside.
SUMMER HERE, WINTER HERE
In summer, long days split between the beach, the pool and the court, with dinner outside as the light fades. Houses with a pool and tennis court book out first for the summer school holidays, so plan ahead.
In winter, Wild Shores turns quiet and cosy. Rug up for a wild walk along the back beaches, come home to the gas log fire, and spend a slow afternoon at a nearby winery or soaking at the Peninsula Hot Springs, a short drive away.
