1912 Heritage Residence Santorini, Main Square

My family and I came to Santorini for a two-day excursion at the end of our vacation in Greece. We wish we had stayed longer! This was an absolutely lovely property, newly available to guests, which had us fantasizing about giving up our mainland existence and living the rest of our lives like barefoot artists. The village of Megalochori is in the "heart of Santorini," so it didn't matter that we had no car, because a short walk took us to the main island thoroughfare, where cheap and frequent buses ran between the beach at Perissa and the clifftop capital of Fira -- and from Fira to every other point on the island. We saw an enormous amount in two days, but to be honest, I would have been happy to spend the whole time in the classic white-washed home with its little courtyard, high round ceilings, and wooden window shutters, spanking clean and furnished for a longer stay. The hosts were super-helpful and attentive and left us a bottle of crisp Greek wine from their own winery, to savor on the rooftop terrace with a picture postcard view. Highly recommended!

If you have a car on Santorini, you will need to contact the hosts about options for parking. If you're coming on foot from the ferry, you will need a taxi to and from the harbor, which will run you 50 Euros each way. The taxis are competitive, so you might get a cut-rate on shorter excursions -- but 50 Euros per trip is a good rule of thumb and probably the same from the airport. That said, this is an ideal choice for pedestrians because of the central location and the convenient bus routes. Megalochori is a considerably smaller, less bustling community than Fira, which was perfect for us, but which a younger or singles crowd might not prefer. The rooftop terrace has no railings, so be careful if you're traveling with children.

Wonderful apartment in and amazing neighbourhood. The apartment is very beautiful and comfortable. The owners are very kind. The apartment has an incredible rooftop terrace, and is nicely furnished and well-equipped. This is the best place to stay in Santorino.
