    If you are visiting Berkeley and looking for an affordable place to stay, the Downtown Berkeley YMCA Residence is an interesting option. The biggest advantage is the location: you are in the heart of downtown Berkeley, just a short walk from UC Berkeley, restaurants, cafés, and public transportation. What I liked most: * Great location * Friendly atmosphere * Access to YMCA facilities, including fitness and recreation options * Much more affordable than many hotels in Berkeley Of course, this is not a luxury hotel. The rooms are simple, and the experience is closer to a student residence or hostel-style accommodation. But if you want to explore Berkeley, visit UC Berkeley, and save money for experiences, this can be a very practical choice. Downtown Berkeley YMCA Residence — a place where students, travelers, and visitors meet the spirit of Berkeley.

    The YMCA has only the basics, it is definitely hostel-like. But it had everything I needed. The community bathrooms were cleaned frequently, my room had a big refrigerator. The window opened up onto a generator of some kind which was loud (and the window had to stay open due to heat) but that was the only downside, and I got used to it quickly. It's right downtown and way cheaper than the hotels nearby. I think you can also use the YMCA gym but I did not stay long enough to need that, so I did not confirm.
