About this villa rental

Summary:

Book the entire 300-year-old riverside watermill: 9 bedrooms, 7 bathrooms, 20 guests, private river beach. Four restored stone houses on the banks of the River Coura in Vilar de Mouros — the only property with direct access to a stunning river beach. 5 km from Caminha, 10 km from the Atlantic coast. Ideal for family reunions, group retreats and celebrations.

The Space:

Three hundred years of history lie within the granite walls of this restored watermill in Vilar de Mouros, where the constant murmur of the River Coura drifts through dark wooden windows. The complex brings together four independent stone houses, with a total capacity for 20 guests, sharing private gardens and direct access to a river beach.

The main house, the largest of the group, accommodates 10 guests in 4 bedrooms with queen‑size beds and bunk beds. The two intermediate houses each offer two bedrooms (one queen and two single beds). The smaller house includes one queen bedroom with a sofa bed. Inside, the original granite blends with walnut‑tone hardwood floors, exposed beams, and a striking detail: a glass floor panel revealing the century‑old milling mechanisms beneath.

The houses in the complex

Main House (T4) — 4 bedrooms, 4 bathrooms, sleeps 10. Three queen bedrooms plus one twin room. Fully equipped kitchen and living room with river views.

Bob Dylan House — 1 queen bedroom, 1 bathroom, sofa bed in the living room, sleeps 4. Direct access to the river.

Joe Cocker House — 2 bedrooms (1 queen + 2 singles), 1 bathroom, sleeps 4. Kitchenette and private entrance.

U2 Loft — compact mezzanine studio with 1 queen bedroom and 1 bathroom, sleeps 2, set above the old mill race.

All houses preserve their original elements — granite, walnut flooring, and wooden beams — while offering modern comfort, including Wi‑Fi, heating, and fully equipped kitchens. Outside, guests enjoy shared gardens, a barbecue area, sun‑drenched terraces, and a private path exclusive to the property that leads to the riverside beach, which is open for public use.

Guest Access:

Guests have exclusive access to the entire property, including all four houses, the private gardens, the barbecue area and the path that leads directly to the Coura River beach. Each house has its own independent entrance. The property offers free private parking with space for several vehicles. The Portugal Active concierge service is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, ready to assist with anything you may need, from organizing local excursions to arranging private chef services. Please request any additional services at least 72 hours in advance.

The Neighborhood:

The Coura River wraps around the property in a gentle curve, offering a crystal‑clear river beach right at your doorstep. Vilar de Mouros, a quiet riverside village in the Alto Minho and home to Portugal’s oldest music festival, is a place where silence is broken only by birdsong and the sound of water running over the rocks. In summer, the Coura is perfect for swimming, with calm, clean waters and sandy banks.

Just a few kilometers away, Caminha (5 km) preserves its medieval center, with the Clock Tower, granite square, restaurants and the ferry to Spain. Even closer, Vila Nova de Cerveira invites you to explore its art scene, castle and the Minho River waterfront. Spain is only 20 km away: La Guardia, famous for its seafood preserves, is a classic getaway.

A little farther, but unmissable, are the Atlantic beaches of Moledo and Vila Praia de Âncora (10 km), Viana do Castelo (25 km) with the Basilica of Santa Luzia perched on the hilltop, Ponte de Lima (30 km) and the Peneda‑Gerês National Park (40 km). For longer trips, both Porto Airport and Santiago de Compostela are about 90 km away.

Getting Around:

Driving is the most convenient way to explore the region: Caminha is 5 minutes away, Viana do Castelo is 30 minutes away, and Porto is just over an hour, with the A28 providing fast access north and south. The Spanish border in Caminha opens the way to Galicia’s Rías Baixas. The property offers free private parking with space for several vehicles. For guests arriving from farther away, access is straightforward: Porto Airport is about 1 hour via the A28, Lisbon is 4 hours via the A1/A28, Santiago de Compostela is 1 hour via the AP‑9/A28, and Vigo is only 45 minutes away. Those who prefer public transportation also have good options: Transdev buses connect Vilar de Mouros to Caminha, where a train station (5 km away) on the scenic Minho Line offers direct service to Porto. The nearest bus stop is located about 500 meters from the village.
