About this villa rental
Four independent houses inside a 300-year-old watermill on the banks of the River Coura, in Vilar de Mouros. Stone, timber and flowing water define an extraordinary stay in northern Portugal: a private river beach, lovingly restored interiors and space for up to 20 guests. Just 5 km from Caminha and 10 km from the Atlantic. Perfect for groups, families and celebrations that deserve something truly special.
The Space:
Three centuries of history breathe through the granite walls of this restored watermill in Vilar de Mouros, where the constant murmur of the River Coura drifts through dark wooden windows. The property brings together four independent houses with a combined capacity of 20 guests across 9 bedrooms and 7 full bathrooms. The main house sleeps 10 across four rooms with queen beds and twin beds; the two mid-sized houses each have two bedrooms with a queen and two singles; the smallest house offers a queen room with a sofa bed. Inside, original granite walls meet walnut hardwood floors, exposed timber beams, and one genuinely surprising detail: a glass floor panel revealing the mill's centuries-old machinery below. A fully equipped kitchen and generous dining area with a handcrafted chandelier complete a space where time seems to move to the rhythm of the river.
The Neighborhood:
The River Coura curves gently around the property, giving guests direct access to a stunning private freshwater beach with crystal-clear water. Vilar de Mouros is a quiet Alto Minho village where silence is broken only by birdsong and the sound of water moving through the rocks. Five kilometres away, Caminha preserves its medieval heart around the Clock Tower and a handsome granite square. Vila Nova de Cerveira is even closer, inviting a wander through its art scene and riverside castle. Spain is just 20 kilometres across: La Guardia, famed for its seafood conserves, makes a classic afternoon trip. And Viana do Castelo, crowned by the Basilica of Santa Luzia, rewards a full day's exploration.
Getting Around:
A car is the most convenient way to explore the area: Caminha is a 5-minute drive, Viana do Castelo is 30 minutes away and Porto is just over an hour. The A28 motorway provides quick access north and south, while the Spanish border crossing at Caminha opens up the Galician Rías Baixas. Private parking for several vehicles is available on site. For those without a car, Transdev buses connect Vilar de Mouros to Caminha, where there is a train line with direct services to Porto.
