About this house rental

Summary:

Steve Brodie, AIA, designed this family-friendly Sea Ranch home — named for the indigenous word for owl — with panoramic ocean, meadow, and sky views, a gourmet kitchen with a commercial Wolf range, and a woodstove on a quiet cul-de-sac near the Bluff Trail. Three bedrooms sleep 6.

The Space:

Named for the indigenous word for owl, Toto House carries Steve Brodie's Sea Ranch signatures — panoramic ocean and meadow views, a gourmet kitchen with a commercial Wolf range, a woodstove, and a backyard meadow visited by deer and foxes on a Bluff Trail cul-de-sac. Three bedrooms sleep 6.

This house sits on a quiet cul-de-sac adjacent to one of the famed hedgerows and near the scenic Bluff Trail, which offers views of the ocean and access points down to the sandy beach. Salal Creek Cove is about a five-minute walk away, Walk On Beach and Shell Beach are about 10 minutes away by bicycle, and Gualala Point Park is about 20 minutes on foot. A five-minute drive will bring you to groceries, art galleries, and restaurants in Gualala.

BLUFF TRAIL AND GUALALA

Salal Creek Cove is a five-minute walk; Walk On Beach and Shell Beach 10 minutes by bike; Gualala's groceries and galleries five minutes by car. The hedgerow-adjacent cul-de-sac puts Bluff Trail beach access and meadow wildlife — deer, foxes, owls — in daily rotation.

COOKING AND GATHERING

Steve Brodie's layout centers on a gourmet kitchen with commercial Wolf range and extra-large oven, a large dining area for group meals, a woodstove for cool coastal nights, and a private deck when the meadow goes quiet. Gualala Point Park is about 20 minutes on foot when the group wants a longer coastal walk after breakfast.

SLEEPING ARRANGEMENTS

Three bedrooms sleep 6 — king primary plus queen, double, twin, and bunk options for family layouts.

The Neighborhood:

Shared pools and tennis courts at three rec centers provide more opportunities for fun, and golf is also available on-site at the Sea Ranch Golf Links. Gualala is a quick 10-minute drive north for groceries, dining, and fuel. For a scenic outing, Jenner and Bodega Bay are further down Highway 1.

Getting Around:

The drive from San Francisco is approximately 2.5 hours via Highway 101 to Highway 1. Fly into Charles M. Schulz-Sonoma County Airport (STS) in Santa Rosa, about 1.5 hours east, and rent a car. The Highway 1 drive along the coast is spectacular and worth building into your travel day.

Other Things to Note:

Full kitchen (with dishwasher and commercial Wolf range with extra-large oven)

Sea Ranch has three recreation centers with heated pools, saunas, and tennis courts. Access passes are provided with your stay -- check availability upon arrival as these shared amenities can be popular during peak times.

Exterior lighting is minimal by design to preserve the stunning dark sky -- bring a flashlight for evening walks and enjoy some of the best stargazing on the California coast.

Keep your eyes on the horizon from December to April -- gray whales migrate just offshore, and this property has a front-row seat. Visit in spring and the meadows explode with wildflowers. April through June is peak bloom season along the Sonoma Coast. The warmest months are June through September. Expect coastal fog most mornings that gives way to sunny afternoons.

Cell service can be spotty along the coast. The home has WiFi for staying connected.

We had a great stay.

The house was a little dated, but important things such as the kitchen, more than fully equipped, the shower, and most importantly the nice view of the sea were excellent. I would stay there again.

This was a beautiful and well-equipped house with access to miles of bluff trails, perfect for my family of 5 adults. We enjoyed the warmth and ambiance of the wood stove, the flow and openness of the kitchen, living, and dining areas. The windowseats were comfy with great views. The amenities were complete and up to date. If we needed help, the response was quick and effective. Thanks for a great experience!

The home is a little older but has all the right upgrades - cozy custom cushions in the living room, new plush carpet. Definitely a place for cooks: we loved the commercial range in the kitchen which let us whip up 8 burgers in one go for the family, and I've never seen sharper knives in a rental home. No bug screens on windows means the occasional insect flying around, but also that you get great unobstructed views of the meadow and the ocean beyond. Comfortable beds, white towels, and A+ on cleanliness.
