This bolthole in Whitby makes a delightful couples’ retreat or base for a small family seeking a traditional coastal getaway. The town’s cobbled streets, lined with cute eateries and cosy pubs, are on your doorstep, along with historic buildings and fascinating museums. Enjoy relaxing strolls around the working harbour, or head down to the beach (300 metres) for a picnic on the sand. At the end of the day, dine alfresco in the property’s adorable courtyard.
The charming maisonette is reached via a flight of steps to the front door and a porch, where you can store outdoor gear. Inside, discover a cute lounge/kitchen with an original beamed ceiling and homely touches throughout. Rustle up delicious meals here, to share together at the extended breakfast bar, before reclining on the sofa to watch TV. Also on this floor is a twin bedroom with an original cast iron ornamental fireplace. Winding, cottage-style stairs lead to the first floor, with a stylish bathroom and a double bedroom boasting views of Whitby Abbey (this room has a sloping ceiling and characterful beams, meaning you may experience reduced head height in some areas). Outside, sip a sundowner in the enclosed, decked courtyard, surrounded by a quirky original wall decorated in colourful jugs.
Whitby boasts four sandy beaches, making it easy to escape the crowds, even in the height of summer. Take relaxing strolls along the shoreline, being sure to look out for seals and dolphins off the coast. The town is also famous for Whitby jet – a black gemstone made from fossilised wood – so keep a look out for this special keepsake on your travels. Set high above the town is Whitby Abbey, said to be the inspiration for Bram Stoker’s Dracula. The atmospheric ruins are a paradise for photographers, particularly at sunset.
