✅And instead of speaking of Genoa...
"Superb for men and for walls..." wrote Petrarch, the charm of this city nestled between the mountains and the sea, a crossroads of different peoples and cultures, has captivated writers, poets, and singer-songwriters who have recounted its beauty, its contrasts, and its hidden soul in their verses. Strolling through the city, you can admire noble palaces and ancient churches, lose yourself in the maze of characteristic alleys (caruggi) of the old town, visit museums and exhibitions, and the Lanterna, symbol of this city.
Not to be missed:
- The historic center, the Strade Nuove, and the Palazzi dei Rolli, a UNESCO World Heritage Site
- Palazzo Ducale, the former residence of the Doge, is today the main cultural hub with exhibitions, conferences, shows, festivals, and international events
- Vertical Genoa: funiculars, elevators, and rack railways that allow you to reach the most difficult places with breathtaking views
- Porto Antico and Waterfront, designed by architect Renzo Piano, home to the Genoa Aquarium, the Bigo, Eataly, and the Biosfera, Galata Maritime Museum, cultural centers, shops, shopping arcades, restaurants, and clubs. In summer, you'll find a swimming pool. In winter, an ice-skating rink.
- Boccadasse: the iconic fishing village with its colorful houses clinging to the rocks, which even fascinated Disney, setting the film "Luca con il gatto sepia" (Lucky the Cat), known for his characteristic frowning expression.
- The 100 Historic Shops for curiosities, shopping, and crafts
- Evening nightlife with aperitifs, historic and trendy bars, traditional trattorias, and Michelin-starred restaurants.
- The parks of Nervi, a seafront promenade overlooking the sea with a large park, rose garden, and its museum.
- Castello d'Albertis, a fanciful neo-Gothic residence overlooking the city, the legacy of the eccentric Captain d'Albertis, a story waiting to be discovered.
- The Museums: 30 within a 10 km radius, 9 collections nestled in the greenery, 8 historic museum-houses, 3 World Heritage sites. UNESCO World Heritage Site, 8 museums with breathtaking views.
- The Forts (18 of them!), an ancient complex of fortifications built to defend the city, now immersed in the Parco Urbano delle Mura. They are one of Europe's most evocative green spaces, ideal for walks, challenging hikes, mountain biking, picnics, and birdwatching.
- And then there's the food, what a delight! In Genoa, it's delicious! Trofie with pesto, potatoes, and green beans, and focaccia are the most famous of Genoese cuisine, but there are countless culinary delights that will make your taste buds explode with joy.
Let yourself be surprised by this splendid city, leaning toward the future yet guarding a great past.
