Glentrool, near Newton Stewart in the county of Wigtownshire is often referred to as the Highlands in miniature, and entertains the visitor with its wild beauty and insightful history. Glentrool Visitor Centre is the gateway to the Galloway hills, a wonderful spot, where you can pick up maps and information on the hill ranges. The Merrick, South Scotland's highest mountain at nearly 2,800ft can be climbed from Bruce's Stone. Should you wish to take a break, there is also a small shop and café for a well-deserved rest. The nearby market town of Newton Stewart, famous for its salmon and trout fishing, lies in a superb location between the serene rolling countryside of the Machars to the south and the Galloway Forest Park to the north.
