The island is less developed and offers a more natural coastal setting, with miles of protected beaches and park lands. The Perdido area is home to Gulf Islands National Seashore Park, Perdido Key State Park, Big Lagoon State Park, and Tarkiln Bayou State Park. The area also offers a waterfront playground and park, along with an accessible Kid's Park.
The local waterways are gorgeous and considered a boaters paradise, with access to both the Gulf and the Intracoastal Waterway. Purple Parrot was so amazing that we are planning to make this an annual family vacation! The best tip I can give that I wish someone would have told us, is to not go to the "free" beach access. Instead, take a left at Johnson Beach entrance and pay the 25 for the full week pass and get there early to grab the best spots. The bay on the left is great for fishing or snorkeling and the ocean to the right is great for jumping waves as it's quite shallow for quite a distance past where the white caps are. All just a quick walk from parking. The "free" spot is roped off for hotels so you can only walk the beach as there is no space to set up anywhere. Purple Parrot has everything you could possibly need. The pool is incredible and mostly shallow for the kids to enjoy. Fantastic shops nearby. Live music and food at the pool. We will definitely be back!
