## Emplacement
Land of passage, at the crossroads of five alpine valleys, Briançon became a fortified city in the 14th century. Dauphinoise city, seat of important fairs, it is the capital of Escartons. Inscribed at the convergence of five valleys - Haute Durance, Guisane, Clarée, Ayes and Cerveyrette - the city of Briançon occupies a remarkable geographical location.
The radiating structure of these valleys very early provided the city with relatively easy external access: to Provence, Queyras, Isère, Drôme and current Italy.
This dense network of communications has long made Briançon appear as a land of passages, an important crossroads in the heart of the Alpine massif, offering the best conditions for the movement of people, the traffic of goods and the exchange of cultures. Easily accessible from the Serre Chevalier station, you can enter the highest fortified town in Europe through the Pignerol gate, at an altitude of 1,326 m, and be welcomed by the Heritage Department, which offers various guided tours at 3 PM every day, led by tour guides approved by the Ministry of Culture, in French, English, Italian (German and Spanish for groups).
