Surroundings Constantia itself is one of the most upmarket neighbourhoods in Cape Town. The lovely landscape makes you forget that you are in the immediate vicinity of a big city. The villas are surrounded by park-like gardens, some also have paddocks and vineyards. On the Constantia Valley Wine Route you can get to know the famous wineries in the green valley of Constantia. Groot Constantia was founded in 1685 and given to the first governor of the Cape, Simon van der Stel, as an experimental farm for agricultural products, who developed viticulture here and made Constantia wine world-famous. In 1925, the Cape Dutch manor house burnt down completely. After being rebuilt, it now houses a museum that provides an insight into the lives of the first Cape settlers.
