If you are looking for a highly traditional Japanese hot spring stay, Beppu Ohana gives you a genuinely rustic experience, though it comes with a couple of unique setups you should know before booking.
The biggest thing to note is that there are no private showers inside the guest rooms. Instead, you have to use the shared public facilities or book a specific time slot for the private indoor or outdoor showers.
If you are sensitive to strong odors, I highly recommend opting for the outdoor shower slots if they are available. The natural hydrogen sulfide (sulfur) smell in the indoor shower area is incredibly overpowering due to the heavy concentrations from the volcanic hot springs. While it is proof of how authentic and pure the mineral water is, the steam tends to trap the heavy, egg-like scent indoors, making it a bit intense to breathe through while trying to get clean. The outdoor setup lets the steam vent into the open air, making for a much more comfortable experience.
