With its three districts—Büttelborn, Klein-Gerau, and Worfelden—the region offers a diverse range of experiences for visitors who value authenticity, relaxation, and cultural diversity. Historical Landmarks – The Past Comes Alive The historic town hall of Büttelborn, built in 1582, is considered an architectural gem. The intricately carved “Sauerkraut Man” serves as a reminder of the region’s former economic reliance on sauerkraut production. Equally steeped in history is the Protestant church, featuring a late-Gothic choir from the 15th century and a Baroque nave dating from 1728—an impressive testament to sacred architecture. No less impressive is the half-timbered church in Worfelden. Built in 1696, it houses one of Germany’s oldest playable organs—a work by the renowned organ builder Adam Knauth from 1624. Experience Nature—Habitats with Character Nature lovers will find an 88-hectare nature reserve of special ecological importance in the floodplain meadows southwest of Büttelborn. More than 120 bird species, including the majestic white stork, are native to this area. Extensive grazing by hardy Galloway cattle and Red Highland cattle helps preserve this unique biotope. Other natural highlights in the area include the “Am Belzberg” nature reserve near Klein-Gerau—a refuge for rare sand grassland plants—as well as the idyllic “Teich am Braunshardter Tännchen,” which serves as an important resting place for migratory birds. Cultural Diversity – A Thriving Community A cultural fixture is the “Café Extra,” Hesse’s smallest municipal cabaret theater. For over three decades, it has delighted audiences with a diverse program of music, cabaret, and theater.
