Fortunately, the landscape remains unchanged today. The house was expanded with two wings to the east and west by Léon Geoffray at the end of the 19th century.
The Château de Vaulx de Chizeul lies on the border between the Charolais and Brionnais regions. This castle, whose origins date back to the 14th century, was owned by the de Choiseul family until 1435. The name “de Chizeul” is a corruption of the family name.
From 1471 onward, the lords of Vaulx were the Damas, a prominent Burgundian family, one branch of which was known as the Damas de Vaux. The castle, the fortified strongholds, hamlets, and lands associated with it remained the property of the Damas family until 1793—that is, for more than three centuries.
The castle occupied a commanding position in the region. It was imposing in size (91 meters by 29 meters) and consisted of a square keep, a stately residence, a granary, and a prison used to enforce sentences imposed by the lord, who held judicial authority over his lands.
The castle suffered damage during the Wars of Religion in the 16th century and again in 1793, when it was sold as national property after the family had emigrated during the Revolution. All that remains today is a ruin that was likely the prison.
The current Château de Vaulx stands 200 meters from the former Château de Vaulx de Chizeul. This was the former residence of the principal officers and farmers-general of the Vaulx estate—that is, the administrators and trusted servants of the lord. The role of the administrators was all the more important because the Damas family spent only a short time in Vaulx, residing instead in Paris or at the Château de Dyo, of which they were also the lords.
Part of the current Château de Vaulx dates back to the 16th century, as evidenced by the stones on the façade dated 1563. The château was gradually modified and expanded to take on its current appearance.
