This is a fantastic country hotel in the heart of Lumsden — and the perfect central stopover for anyone travelling further afield around the South Island. The rooms have been beautifully given a makeover while still retaining the character and charm of a building that’s well over 100 years old and steeped in local history. You get modern comforts without losing that wonderful old-country hotel atmosphere. The hospitality is exactly what you hope for in a Kiwi country pub — friendly, genuine, down-to-earth and welcoming. Add a beautiful open fire, a great atmosphere and an awesome country pub menu, and you’ve got a place that’s very easy to settle into. And as a lovely bonus, the resident family dog is very much part of the furniture, adding to the homely, relaxed feel of the place. Whether you’re stopping for the night or staying a little longer, this is the sort of hotel that reminds you why country pubs are special. **Highly recommended — great people, great food, great atmosphere, a very special four-legged local, and plenty of old-fashioned Kiwi character. We’ll definitely be back !**

Nothing to dislike, great place for the location, money and hospitality

Warm welcome from young and very enthusiastic I think son of the proprietor. He explained that unfortunately they didn’t yet have their liquor licence so the bar wasn’t functioning but we were welcome to order food there and could byo drinks to have in our room, use the pool table etc. He came to room with us and showed us how everything worked. Room was newly renovated and clean and fresh.

The hotel was under renovation and had the potential to be great. No pub or bar in the village. Several takeaway places.

Jaxson and Danny were absolute stars, attentive and eager to please.Thanks for helping with our luggage, we really appreciated your help. A few improvements necessary,but it pays to remember that this hotel is 160 years old and is very much a work in process Excellent value,and will be better once breakfast and dessert menus are completed. As we mentioned re signage,they are awaiting for it to be finished and put up.

The bed was very comfortable. The shower was also very good and so was the toilet and handbasin. Towels and cloths were nice an fresh and white. The host allowed us to fix our own breakfast in the kitchen with products we brought.

The pub had no licence so we could not drink. The kitchen was not to my standard. The host was very talkative.
