[The Story of This Place]
Settlement began in 1886, but rice cultivation on the peatlands failed time and time again.
After overcoming those difficult days, rice cultivation finally succeeded in 1891.
Since then, this area has developed as a rural community.
In 1999, this building was constructed as an architect’s vacation home.
Its beautiful design was highly acclaimed and won an award from the Japan Institute of Architects.
Today, it has become a precious piece of land where it is even difficult to construct new buildings.
This area also retains a history of being dotted with huts that once housed prisoners.
Amid the silence of a snow-covered landscape, please enjoy this special space where the past and present intersect.
