Style was great and it was a really fun/different place to stay. Location is also amazing - right in the centre of Oxford.
It’s very much an Airbnb-style place which was fine for us but the check in details suggest there’s a front desk (which there obviously isn’t). We had issues with locking our door and literally found a set of keys just on the floor outside where anyone could have found them. The team weren’t that quick to respond via email and didn’t seem to appreciate the issue - just saying they would ‘escalate’ it. We ended up having to leave the keys outside again to properly lock up and haven’t heard from them since.

It was so unusual, but an extremely cool location and everything about the refurbishment from its original purpose was well done...I very much doubt the original occupants of the loo would have contemplated their feet warmed by underfloor heating!! Wish I could have stayed longer.
The steps going down were waterlogged, but given they probably had the grooves of many, many past feet, it is quite understandable.

Unusual and a bit of an adventure
Poor lighting internally (inadequate to read a book). Could not get live UK TV channels, though that could be my fault? Water fell on my head when opening the door (it was raining but it had collected)

Decor and location.
The fact we had not heating or hot water! Still had no resolution on the issue . Host uncontactable.

Very central location, and obviously a lot of thought had gone into the design of the property. The bed was very comfortable. Unfortunately the other issues outweighed the positives.
Where do I begin??
Very steep and slippery steps down to the property (it's in a basement) with no handrail was extremely dangerous.
I wish I had read previous reviews. The wifi was horrendous. Kept cutting out, and very poor strength when it did work. Impossible to work from the property, and as the TV is internet based it was impossible to watch TV most of the time.
No phone signal in the basement property and without reliable internet it was not possible to keep in touch with work colleagues.
As stated in previous reviews, the heating did not work, and the property was absolutely freezing. This is obviously an ongoing problem which has just been ignored. In the end I purchased a fan heater from a nearby hardware shop which provided sufficient warmth for my stay.
Although clearly money had been spent converting this former public toilet into accommodation, there has been no ongoing maintenance. Broken toilet flush and toilet brush, Bathroom towel rail not working, the list goes on!
The property's is not as described - I paid extra for the King Suite which is described as having a seating area and separate bedroom, this is not the case. Neither unit has a seperate lounge / sitting area, just two rather uncomfortable dining chairs in the bedroom itself.
The listing states that there is daily housekeeping, again not the case. I stayed for a week and there was no housekeeping.
In the questions asked by previous travellers, they reply stating that this is an apart hotel It is not - it is a converted public toilet accessed via a small island in the middle of a very busy road with no pedestrian crossing to the island.
As previous reviews state, road noise is a big problem, as are noise from the two kebab vans which park on either side of the road which are frequented in the early hours by late night revellers.
I sent a detailed email to the property outlining my concerns and the issues experienced, and received no reply. AVOID, AVOID, AVOID!

The location is fantastic, very central. The furnishings and decor are trendy and cool.
There was a power outage when we returned to our room in the evening of our stay. We had no electricity whatsoever, staff were extremely unhelpful and did nothing to help. No one came to check-in on us or help us resolve the issue. I ended up having to fix the issue myself. To add insult to injury, I’m still waiting after a month for compensation for my stay. Would not recommend.

The conversion is a novelty. The decor was contemporary and thoughtfully put together. The accommodation was clean and freshly decorated. The bed was comfortable. The location is central.
There was no hot water and the underfloor heating in the main room did not appear to be working. As the stay was in November, the suite was extremely cold overnight.
It should be underlined that the suite feels extremely isolated as there is no immediate neighbour (there is no shared walkway to the second suite). This is exacerbated by the fact that there is no concierge and the emergency number provided by the property goes through to another accommodation about a mile from The Netty. If you have any problems, they cannot be handled quickly.
As a single business traveller I would not stay at The Netty again. The property is accessed by a descending staircase which is completely hidden from public view and the access door is 'blind', that is to say that there is no spy hole in the door and the staircase is to the immediate right. The access door has an internal bolt but does not feel robust. As you cannot see anything outside the property when you are inside, you feel trapped and extremely vulnerable. I initially had issues with the wifi and could not make calls - the stay was quickly turning into a Netflix doc. Security-wise the property rates extremely poorly and therefore it is extremely difficult to relax, let alone sleep.
I have requested a refund through Booking.com but they have not yet heard back from the owners of the property. The property was 'pushed' by Booking.com when I made a search for a business/single traveller/one night stay - my view is that recommendation was entirely inappropriate.

The cosiest room, so peaceful but right in the centre of town. Decorated beautifully!! Would stay again and recommend!
We had 2 young kids knock on the door at 4am saying something about a cleaners code. Was a little unsettling but I think they were just students trying their luck!

Beautiful and great location.
No phone reception.
7.0 / 10.0
It was very niche, it ticked all the boxes for what we wanted and location was spot on. It also was very cool in the fact it literally is in the middle of pavement.
Things that I understand the reasons behind and I’m not sure how you make it better. It was cold, and there wasn’t anyway of making it heat up more. I tried a few ways but it just wouldn’t heat up enough. Also the fact you need to leave the extractor fan on otherwise you get condensation and that in turn causes dripping.

Good location
Had trouble locating it. A picture would have helped enormously. The door code didn’t work. Info. said to contact reception? There wasn’t a reception. This was the main reason we couldn’t find it as a reception you find in a building, not an underground room. The ceiling blind didn’t work. Television reception was poor.

It was right in the centre, super close to everything like shops/ bars etc. It was really cozy, quite dark in there but super cute. They left us some drinks in the fridge and housekeeping came and checked that everything was okay for us, it was lovely.
The only thing i didn’t like was that the door rattles when a car goes by, sounding like someone is trying to come in, we had to prop a stool up next to it overnight so we could sleep, but apart from that is was perfect. For anyone else coming, i’d recommend doing a park and ride as all of the car parks were crazy money.

It is an amazing place, it is probably one of the best decorated places I have ever been. The bed is really comfortable too. It is incredible inside.
My door pin didn't work and the wifi is very poor it keeps dropping.

As an interior designer by trade I had been intrigued to visit and stay in one of The Netty Suites and it did not disappoint. The attention to detail was stunning and the quality of everything was spot on! Luxurious yet whimsical, timeless and atmospheric. I would love to visit again
As a solo traveller an inside lock would have helped me feel a little bit more secure

The room was a unique, luxurious space in an excellent location. It was a very comfortable stay, all of the furniture and facilities were high quality.

Interesting concept and central location
I feel quite unsafe as it is under the steps of a busy road. Door lock is quite basic with only a keypad lock. No front desk or other security measures. Also room is not tidy when i enter. I would not recommend others.
7.0 / 10.0
While the room was clean, stylishly decorated, and equipped with thoughtful touches like an iron, steamer, ironing board, and access to Netflix, Disney+, and Amazon Prime, the serious security issues overshadowed the positives.
When we first arrived, the key code wouldn’t work. I phoned reception, who changed it and gave me a new one over the phone, without asking a single question to confirm I was actually the guest. This means anyone could call, claim to be staying there, and be given access to the room. The door itself used a basic, easily guessable keypad code and felt flimsy. Paired with the location, both my partner and I felt unsafe and vulnerable throughout the stay. I would not have felt comfortable staying here alone, and this lack of security would absolutely stop me from booking again.
Other issues included spotty Wi-Fi, an ineffective fan during a heatwave, and a bathroom sink that splashed water all over the floor. But these were minor compared to the glaring security risks. Travellers should be aware before booking.

Very cute and I love all of the little details. It feels like staying in a Wes Anderson film. The fan was great, TV great quality, strong shower. The bed was extremely comfortable. All in all just an idyllic stay.
8.0 / 10.0
The location is very good, however, after rain it was a bit hazardous to take luggage down the stairs. The amenities and facilities are excellent, the room is spacious and very clean. Needs a bit more ventilation and light, but good otherwise.
the drainage in the stairs leading to the apartment and ventilation in the room.

The location was in the centre of Oxford, so was good for getting to the main places we wanted. The bed was reasonably comfortable, as were the pillows and the level of decoration and facilities were what you would expect in a mid-range hotel. They also supplied sheets and a blanket which we had requested.
We were horrified when we eventually found the room after walking up and down St. Giles and then speaking to the hotel. We couldn't believe this was what Booking dot com had listed as "a recently renovated aparthotel housed in a historic building" The information about the premises was misleading in the extreme, as was the photograph of the location. Had we known this was a refurbished public toilet in the middle of the road we never would have booked this accommodation.
This was a victorian public toilet in the middle of the road, so was accessed by a set of steps that went down under the road. The only door to the toilet was flimsy and was a the bottom of a set of steps, hidden from view, so we never felt secure as this could have easily been forced open. The lighting was very dim and was only made better during daylight by glass squares in the ceiling and next to the door. The wi-fi and TV were connected through the same network which only worked intermittently and was very slow, so most of the time neither were available.
We did complain a number of times about issues and some things were sorted, like both toilet rooms having the same access code. The plumbing for the toilet was not good, which was really surprising considering this was supposed to have been a toilet.
The space was small with very little storage, but probably OK for a night or two. However, it was very warm with no ability to open any windows and the air conditioning, which didn't work well, was too noisy to be able to sleep with it on. Also the supplied fan didn't really help as it only moved the hot air around. All in all this was the most disappointing bookings we have ever made.

Location within the city, and its location in general!!
Everything was surprisingly nice.
It was too warm for mid summer but ok
8.0 / 10.0
It was clean and ornate. Nice decor and very central, beer amenities. Good TV too.
Don’t massively like the shower being into the bedroom. I was expecting it to be bigger. Quite noisy from the street because of its location and a bit stuffy.

The property was so difficult to find!! The stairs were wet and steep to carry a suitcase down. The interior
felt like a dungeon and I immediately did not feel safe. After a few minutes I was gone, and found a ‘normal’ hotel that had a welcoming reception and professional presentation. I initially paid for three nights at the Netty Hotel online and am still waiting for a refund from Booking.com.

Very unique, well decorated and clean. The location is also incredibly central and easy to get around from.
Because it’s underground, it is dark and very little natural light which means no windows to open so it’s very stuffy and warm. The fan did help a lot!

Excellent location, in an underground room in the middle of Oxford City Centre. Beautiful decor and very comfy bed. Will definitely return. Great bathroom faciitues and tea and coffee making.
5.0 / 10.0
The decor and design of the room is wonderful, although the enormous TV is placed on the wall at such an angle as to never be useful. The fridge comes stocked with a couple of bottles, which is nice, though no milk for tea.
The Netty is actually 2 suites uniquely placed under St Giles road in Oxford, this means your room is directly accessible from the street as the entrance is on a traffic island in the middle of the road. Whilst lighting wasn't an issue inside, air conditioning and outside noise from the road was. It was stifling in the room and the thermostat and what I assume to be an air con panel did not work.

Great quirky location.
Really beautiful interior
I feel it could have included a fan in the room for the summer months

Very quirky and very nicely furnished!
Liked all of it ! Directions could have been better as had no idea it was in the middle of the road ! A fan would have been excellent - was the hottest day of the year so far

Such a beautiful room and cool concept of a hotel. Everything is tremendously well and luxurious designed and if you feel like staying "under" historic grounds and in a special place in Oxford, this is certainly it. The location is, of course, perfect.
This place might not be the best for certain people. You are quite exposed to the street and people, as the entrance is on a traffic island and everyone could theoretically sleep right in front of your door. There should be a second gate in front of the stairs for safety reasons and this should be better communicated ahead of the booking. It is VERY exposed and I would maybe not sleep here as a woman alone. The room has no direct natural light, but I did not find it a big problem. For us, the air conditioning did not work and it was rather hot during the stay.

The room was beautifully decorated and cosy. Perfect location.
Had trouble actually finding the rooms when we arrived. Had to ask at an Oxford University building.
