Lake Hickory is one the largest freshwater sand bottom lakes in North Carolina. Lake Hickory was created on the Catawba River in 1927 with the completion of the Oxford Dam 11 miles (18 km) northeast of Hickory. The dam parallels the NC Highway 16 bridge over the Catawba River between Interstate 40 and Taylorsville. It is 122 feet (37 m) high, with an overall length of 1,200 feet (370 m). The spillway section of the dam is 550 feet (170 m) long. The lake was named after the City of Hickory and runs along its northern edge. It covers almost 4,223 acres (17.09 km2) with 105 miles (169 km) of shoreline. Full pond elevation is 935 feet above sea level. It is perfect for those who love to swim, ski, tube, boat or enjoy some of the finest fishing in the area. The lake is home to many different species of fish including Striper bass, largemouth and spotted bass, crappie, lake perch, bluegill, sunfish as well as a variety of catfish. Water quality is very good and fed by mountain springs.
