Kalia was delightful! The place was adorable and had all the comforts of home., especially mosquito spray! While it would have been hard to find, off the beaten path, Kalia's directions were perfect and she even waited to hear that we arrived safely before turning off her phone. Thank you, Kalia!

Staying here was an absolute dream. The property was gorgeous, the gardens spectacular and the view unbeatable. Waking each day up to a nature retreat was so lovely. The host, Kalia was so kind and made us feel so welcome. A perfect getaway, well appointed, and we can’t wait to return!

This home is very clean, beautifully decorated and very well equipped. It has everything you’ll need for your stay on the Kohala Coast. The lanai has splendid views up and down the coast & incredible sunsets views. Lots of whale watching, too. It’s close to many beaches, historical sites & good day trips such as up to Hawi & the Pololu Valley Lookout. Kalia is a gracious & helpful host. We highly recommend staying here—5 star all the way!

Warning! You may never want to leave Kohalo Estates 😊. My wife and I spent a week here and loved every minute. The views, location , gracious host. Everything you need for a relaxing and perfect time away. Kalia was so nice and helpful. Always responsive but never intrusive. We explored the Big Island during the day but back in time for beautiful sunsets. Could not have been happier with our stay. Mahalo, Kalia, for sharing this piece of paradise.

This little house is tucked away in the most amazing location away from the hustle and bustle of daily living! Everything was wonderful! The kitchen was stocked with everything we needed to cook a few meals, bed was comfortable, lovely outdoor shower, and plenty of privacy. Breakfast on the patio every morning was a real treat! The geckos visited every morning to see what we were eating, so much fun to watch them! Looking up at the stars at night was just amazing. Loved the quiet (note the birds sing from sunrise to sunset), so we knew it was time to rise and shine when the birds awoke. Kalia was a perfect host! Answered questions quickly and helped us if we needed something. Great place to get away and the views are amazing! We were able to see the whales one day when they are active in the water with the binoculars that were provided. Overall great experience, thanks so much for sharing your little piece of paradise!

We love this cottage. Absolutely everything is carefully curated. We stayed here six tears ago, loved it then, love it more now. The location is excellent, the decor is superb and the view from the Lani is to die for. Kalia is a wonderful host. I recommend her place unequivocally.

We absolutely loved our time at Hale O Pueo. The accommodation is very comfortable, and the lanai is a beautiful spot to relax and look out over the lovely garden toward the ocean. Kalia was so pleasant and helpful, and made us feel at home right away. We're looking forward to our next stay!

Rejuvenating and relaxing. Perfect. We never got out of our lounge clothes because we couldn't bear to leave our oasis. The flowers, the birds, the curious sweet little gechos. The kitchen was well equipped. The lanai was so comfortable--even a hammock for naps. Lovely outdoor shower and the bed was so comfortable. Wifi was excellent, if you need it and tv offered sufficient options if you felt you needed that. Overall, so peaceful and just superb.

Kalia’s property was an absolute dream. My fiancé and I spent a week at the property and loved it. From enjoying coffee on the lanai in the morning breeze to dinner outside watching the sunset. BEAUTIFUL! We loved all of the flowers and gardens surrounding us and admired the birds singing in the morning. Kalia was so kind and helpful. She was quick to respond to questions and available. She has really made a special place unlike any other!

We had a fabulous stay at Kalia’s place! It was so peaceful and relaxing! We loved resting and playing cards on the deck with the beautiful garden and ocean views. Kalia was very easy to reach and super helpful. We loved the outdoor shower and all the beach supplies. It was hard to leave!

Since this property was already booked for the four nights we were there, Kalia graciously offered her home, which is the duplex side of the home. The view is spectacular!! The landscaping around the home is gorgeous! The location of the home was perfect, easy access to beaches or to Waipio Valley, etc. but just far enough out to make you feel like you are away from all the congestion. Kalia is a wonderful hostess. She kept in touch over e-mail before our arrival and was prompt in answering any questions. She also provided not only beach towels, but access to beach chairs, snorkel gear, etc., which those extra's are such a plus! She kindly allowed us to stay after 11 on our departure day. We heard wild turkeys and birds, which only added to our experience. I wish we could have stayed longer (or forever)!

The pictures tell the story. They are recent and accurate depictions of an intelligently-planned and laid out, tastefully-decorated, totally functional and very beautiful space with sweeping panoramic views that stretch nearly to the airport and around to Maui. The setting is a beautifully-groomed flowering oasis in a rural semi-arid pastureland at 800' elevation. The huge covered lanai with its comfortable hammock and furniture provides great functional outdoor space, the big glass doors bring the outside views and breezes in, and the amenities are very amenable. "Off the grid" doesn't involve any hardship or inconvenience, unless you find birdsong irritating! Kalia is an excellent hostess, providing warm care and attention and anticipating her guests' needs, while still respecting the desire for privacy that drew you away from the tourist hordes to begin with. Hale O'Pueo is just right for the Big Island visitor who wants to experience the less-touristed local values of Kawaihae, Hawi, Waimea and the rugged North Kohala coast, but still wants easy access to beaches like Hapuna and Wailea. We stayed for 12 nights, and would gladly have stayed for 120. Maybe next time...

What a great home base for our first visit to the Big Island. An excellent dwelling--clean, well equipped, out-of-the-way. The location was north of the vog zone and close to white sandy beaches. We explored the whole island and were glad we stayed here. Extra points for: ALL the beach gear that was appreciated and used, fresh juicy lemons from the yard, the view and all the windows, and the outside shower. I have already passed on the rental info to friends.

We have just returned from our fourth stay at Hale O'Pueo - this time we stayed for a full four weeks and yet it feels as if we had arrived yesterday! The location is spectacularly beautiful, off the beaten path, very private (you may go days without seeing anybody), very quiet and serene, with a view that you will dream about for many months after returning home. Sunsets from the lanai are otherworldly, and you will wake up with the song of the birds. It is located some 800 ft above sea level and a couple of miles from the coast, with an absolutely unimpeded view of the ocean, almost all the way to Kona. This high location is actually a big plus, as it means that it is always cooler than right next to the ocean, and the breeze is always cool and dry. And there is no traffic noise - the closest road with any significant traffic is miles away (did I say that you may not see anybody unless you choose to?)! Walk a few hundred feet up the driveway and you will have an incredible view of Mauna Kea (so close that it feels you could touch it), Mauna Loa and Hualalai. Moonless nights bring the most unbelievable stars, or, if the Moon is over the horizon, an incredible view of the moonlit ocean. The house itself is very comfortable, completely private, IMMACULATELY CLEAN, and very well maintained - everything works, the paint looks like it went up yesterday, the floors look untrodden, the furniture is modern and in as-new shape, and so are the kitchen and bathroom. The photos on the owner's website show EXACTLY what the house looks like - there is no Photoshop nor stock photos here! It is very well appointed with absolutely everything that you will need for your stay. There is no AC but believe me, YOU WILL NOT NEED IT!! In fact, some nights you may even need a thin blanket (also provided - did I say that the house has all you need?). More importantly, no AC means none of the annoying noise that comes with it! Some of the most beautiful beaches in Hawaii (and maybe in the whole world) are only a few minutes drive away. Need a beach umbrella, beach chairs, cooler and snorkel gear? Check the walk-in closet, they are all there for you to use, but please take good care of the stuff, as we will want to use it on our next visit :) The beautiful Hawi area with its great craft stores is only 20 minutes away, Kona some 40 minutes, and Hilo a couple of hours away. If you want to know why Hale O' Pueo is such a special place, go there. You will not regret it!!

This place was truly magical for us. My wife and I just got back from a 2 week honeymoon on the big island, starting at Kalia's Hale O Pueo followed by three other amazing vacation rentals...but this place was far and away our favorite (and it was actually the least expensive). We spent time on all sides of the island, and the Kohala coast area was easily our favorite. Close proximity to all the best beaches and snorkeling spots (just ask Kalia, the best snorkeling on the entire island is down the road 1-2 minutes, and you will have it completely to yourself!). It was awesome to check out the numerous beaches and endless snorkeling spots and be able to escape back to the house for peace and quite. The outdoor shower is wonderful, the place is super clean and the airflow through the screened doors and windows makes for really cool and peaceful nights. The sunsets here were lovely, the stars at night were endless, and you even get a hint of sunrise too (the mornings here were my favorite... sipping coffee in the hammock). The kitchen is really well equipped (better than any of the other places we stayed), which we really appreciated because we love to cook. Down the street there is even a local fish market (very small but super convenient) and an easy drive into Waimea to hit the farmers markets or grocery stores. If you are a foodie, eating out on the Big Island can be a little frustrating, but it is wonderful to cook here, and this is the spot to do it. So much fresh produce, fish and meat available, it was really easy to use nearly 100% locally produced ingredients for all of our meals. When we arrived, we were a bit surprised that the owner (Kalia) and her partner (Lon) lived in the house attached to the other side (however, you can barely even tell it's there when you are on the property). But this didn't end up being a problem at all, in fact it was great because Kalia and Lon are awesome and they gave us so many great tips on what to do and where to go. We found our selves even wanting to hang out with them, but they are clearly very conscious about respecting the tenants privacy. We already want to return to the big island, and when we do, we intend to stay here and no where else. I have only one suggestion for this place, and that would be to have some sort of dim lighting option for the lanai for evening dining and hanging out there at night. Otherwise, the place was perfect. Can't wait to return.

We spent a week a Hale O Pueo, and it was wonderful. The house is beautifully constructed, painted and oriented, with a vast view of the North West coastline, where we watched pairs of whales swim up and down the coast every day. Morning walks revealed three volcanoes, Mauna Kea, Mauna Loa and Hualalai and they were stunning. The house was very comfortable, inside and out, and we loved the outside tropical shower. The host was most gracious and helpful, supporting us in any way she could.

We just returned from our 8 day stay at the Hale O Pueo and have only one regret; that we did not stay for two weeks! The Hale was perfect for us, relaxing and calming. The sunsets are beautiful, the geckos entertaining and the location was perfect. Kalia is a gracious, kind and thoughtful host, helping us find a wonderful fruit stand, great walking path on the Northern Coast and an excellent beach for snorkeling. Everything that you will need for a memorable vacation is here. Thank you Kalia!

This home was our home away from home; it has everything we needed; it was warm, comfortable and clean. The lanai was so inviting; the sunsets spectacular. The geckos were so entertaining. We were close to so many lovely towns and activities. The nearby beaches are beautiful and after the end of a busy and fun day we had the perfect oasis to come back to. We highly recommend this home with it's tranquility and awesome view. I could only rate it a 5 star; I really needed 10 stars.

We were stayed in three vrbo places as we circled Hawaii. We were impressed with the comfort of the first two places and thought it can't get any better but this beautiful property wowed us. It is located high on a hill overlooking the Pacific. It is a little bit out of the way but oh so peaceful and relaxing. The furnishings are first rate and comfortable. The kitchen is very well equipped . The entire place is extremely clean. We really enjoyed the lanai and the outdoor shower. Kalia supplies snorkeling gear and has a notebook of suggestions of places to go. She wants you to enjoy the area-- a perfect hostess. We highly recommend staying here.
