Named after the famous book by John Le Carre, “The Spy Who Came In From The Cold,” this retirement home of a former “cold warrior”/intelligence officer and his art educator wife sits on the tidal banks of the Weskeag River in South Thomaston. This newly updated and tastefully decorated home is perfect for guests who want both comfort and most importantly a private, woodsy surrounding with views of the water, wildlife, local lobster boats, and the ebb and flow of the tides.
This very comfortable, 5 bedroom plus den/study home offers plenty of space and modern decor. The large living room has high wood ceilings, a stone fireplace, and a wall of glass windows - opening the interior to 180 degree views of the water and woods - along with an open modern kitchen and dining area. With two large living areas, adults can congregate upstairs while preparing meals or watching a movie, while kids can enjoy the huge downstairs playroom with their own TV/DVD player, full size ping pong and air hockey tables, and a games cabinet and table. This layout plus a kids bunk room with one bunk and two twin beds and a separate room with a queen bed, a wrapround outdoor deck, and stairs providing riverside access for clamming or kayaking make this house a perfect base for a family vacation. Halls lined with bookshelves, a separate reading/TV room with deep comfortable chairs, built-in benches on the deck and a screened-in gazebo outdoors make this home a reader’s delight as well.
The house also features access for those with limited mobility, and is set up to be easily navigated with hardwood floors, a large master suite, a wheelchair accessible bath and shower room. The elevator is no longer accessible to the lower level.
The whole house has recently had a complete renovation with all of the highest level of materials and furnishings used for your comfort and relaxation. Enjoy your mornings lounging on the new wraparound deck, watching eagles dive for fish in the river or the lobster boats coming and going. Take day trips to neighboring towns Thomaston, Rockland, and Camden for shopping, museums, and restaurants. Spend an afternoon on Birch Point State Beach or take a short hike to the Owls Head lighthouse, both only minutes away. Enjoy a crab melt at the Keag (pronounced Gig) store or a lobster roll at Millers or McLoons, all local favorites. Or purchase live lobsters from world famous Atwood’s Lobster Company in Spruce Head and have your own waterside lobster bake.
