THE PROPERTY
This elegant, historic (circa 1873) furnished townhouse apartment is located among other stately town-homes on a tree-lined street bordering on Blagden Alley and just 1/2 block from the Walter E. Washington Convention Center. The property has a pedigree as the home of the first African American Senator to serve a full term in office, Senator Blanche Kelso Bruce of Mississippi.
Note that this is a fully furnished apartment (sorry the furniture can't be removed). At 1200 SF, this is a very large space for a 1 bedroom. It features a fully equipped kitchen with granite counters and stainless steel appliances, and a modern glass dining table with seating for 8. The living room has full windows facing South for lots of light in the living area, a 40" TV, and leather furniture including a fold out queen bed for visitors. The large bedroom has a queen bed, a work area in a windowed alcove, a sofa/bunk bed combination, a 40" TV, and a large walk-in closet with professional organizers. The full bath features bamboo walls and a tub/shower combination. A stacked washer dryer is in a hall closet. We have central heat and AC.

LOCATION
Blagden Alley residents embrace the historic roots of the neighborhood, the convenience of the new modern convention center and the Metro, and the chicness of this neighborhood. The historic Blagden Alley/ Naylor Court area radiates urban cool and is heavy on great eateries! You're just 1-2 blocks from The Dabney, All Purpose Pizza, Seylou Bakery & Coffee, Tiger Fork, La Coulomb Coffee, and Corduroy to name but a few. You'll be just 5 blocks away from landmarks like the National Portrait Gallery and the National Museum of American Art. The White House and the National Gallery of Art on the National Mall are both an 11-block walk. There's also a new Giant supermarket just 3 blocks away!

TRANSPORTATION
You won't need a car, the Mt Vernon - Convention Center Metro is 11/2 blocks away. Union Station is a transportation hub for the Mid-Atlantic region. The station contains two train lines (AMTRAK; and MARC trains to and from Maryland). Also accessible are the Metro's Red Line, Metrobuses, the "Circulator" Bus, tour operators, rental cars, scooters and bikes.

Great stay with responsive host and huge property!

Apartment was great for our family of 4 (2 teenagers) having plenty of space with nice kitchen and living room area. We were in town for a 5 day trip to be a tourist and visit museums. Shaw neighborhood is great for restaurants. Proximity to Metro Center Station is a huge plus for days you don’t feel like making the walk to or from the museums and monuments. Minutes away from CVS and seconds away from a liquor store were a plus. Fun fact is this is the Blanche Bruce House (look it up) and was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1975. Overall a great home base for our family.

Overall, we had a great time at this property. Location was perfect and lots of good eats and coffee nearby. Liked the Blagden Alley walk, art, cafés and bars. Felt like finding a secret restaurant/bar that other people didn’t know existed. Unconventional Diner was great and I highly recommend. Also, All Purpose Pizza was great as well as Le Columbe Coffee and the Calico Bar in Blagden Alley; outstanding all around. Metro was right across Convention Center and convenient. The accommodations were clean and everything worked. Some of the furniture is not constructed well but the kitchen and bath were highly functional and clean. 5 stars for that! One thing I would have liked having is a cable TV option to watch all sports and channels (Sunday and Monday football could only be found in Spanish and many other options required paid access) for the “wind down” time in the evening. You will also hear people upstairs moving about at all times of night. First night was the worst with footsteps/walking back and forth above the back bedroom late at night but this got much quieter as the rest of the week went on. We had one evening where the owner’s 18yo kid elected to throw a social gathering upstairs on a Friday night that fortunately quieted down around 10:30. We contacted management and they were very responsive to this and gave us a credit for the hassle. Excellent communication and service the whole way through. Overall, loved the location and history of this spot (Senator Blanche K. Bruce living here) and the cool urban vibe found in the restaurants and bars. Thanks for making our stay in DC a great one.

Rating Details: The property manager was adequately helpful. The vacation rental was somewhat dirty. I was very happy with the location. I was somewhat dissatisfied with the condition of the vacation rental. Overall, I do not recommend this vacation rental. Reviewer Comments: On walking into the place, it smelled like a port-a-potty. We had to air out the entire place for three days before it smelled any better, and then were asked to keep our outside door closed. In addition, the bed sheets had clearly not been cleaned with very obvious (and disgusting) "wet spots" as well as copious amounts of hair all over the bed that made me not want to sleep at the property for the first two days (in addition to the smell). After I washed all of the bedsheets on all of the beds a few times, left the doors open for three days to air out the smell, and between playing catch-and-release with very large cockroaches– the place was acceptable.
